I don't think nu-atheism had any remarkable impact on broader society beyond some discussion circles.

Yeah I know more about the nu-metal of the 2000s than the nu-atheism. I'm a fan of breaking benjamin, not breaking the bible

I would say it had some impact, as many of its big name people were big proponents of STEM focus in education.

I vaguely remember there being a thing back then like that, but I didn't actually pay much attention to it so UMN could well be correct.

As an atheist, I know I don't hate the humanities. I'm an avid music lover to a point I'll talk endlessly about how the different instruments in a song came together to make the masterpiece the song was, and I can play minuet in G on the guitar.

Also I listen to Lil B, the man who everyone knows is the CEO of music, so I probably wouldn't be liked by the nu-atheists if they hate the humanities

Based on the Atheists I know, myself included, hatred of the humanities is at roughly 0%. The plural of anecdote is not data, however, so that is just my experience.

Yeah, the "hatred of humanities" thing comes so far out of left field, that I think it can probably be dismissed.

Yeah, I mean, think about all the things that constitute the humanities. Religion sure, but also language and philosophy and literature. If you look at great thinkers like Hitchens, who was an atheist, you see nothing but respect for the humanities.

I mean...I know people in general can often question the value of the humanities, but atheists specifically? I've never noticed a link.

I get the sense UMN is probably rounding up Theology to the Humanities in general.

New atheists/nu-atheists have a thing for idolising hard sciences and dismissing everything else. It's obviously not an atheist thing in general.

Not just theology, but also philosophy. Specifically the way Sam Harris and his Acolytes dismiss all philosophy which he doesn't agree with, and acts as though anything philosophy has discovered was already self-evident. Even Stephen Hawking claimed that science made philosophy irrelevant.

^ This, I didn't mean atheists in-general. I tried to specify Nu-Atheists (which I capitalize because I think they're more a creed than a lack of belief).

To be fair a whole lot of western philosophy, specifically anything remotely derivated from german idealism, deserves to put on a bonfire.

Yeah having an extreme position of science being the only thing that matters is no bueno.

I remember that Nietzsche made a joke about Schleiermacher, but it currently escapes me. It was a play on words if I remember rightly, but it doesn't translate very well into English.

And really, the modern life we have today in the west, and certain countries in the East (Like Japan and South Korea) is thanks to the decrease in power of the Churches around the world.

State atheism, like state religion, should not happen, but atheism itself has helped the world to become fairer. When you take a look are far more religious countries, their tolerance for certain aspects of life is not seen.

Science advances, religion lingers. The more advanced the country, the less likely they are to be religious.

Not to mention, the European colonial empires is a major reason as to why so many civilisations, people, and cultures have suffered dramatically, especially the indigenous Americans.

Do you have a quote from that defense? I'd be interested in seeing it. I of course realize there's different levels, so you have a point. I've mainly seen Sam Harris, and he seems to be of a more extreme empiricism than the rest.

That's what I say a lot, the Philippines are not Catholic because they wanted to be Catholic, they were imposed and forced to accept that religion due to Bigger Army Diplomacy.
Now the Philippines is one of the most devout Catholic nations on Earth, despite not even being European.
