Firstly, I get the impression that many males attempt to downplay their attraction to a woman if they have contempt for her, and many women attempt to downplay their contempt for a male if they find him attractive. The distinction between lust and respect is key to getting anywhere with figuring this out.

Secondly, I also wonder about possible feedback loops between respect (or lack thereof) and lust. (Or lack thereof.) The way popular opinion associates ideas they don't like with presumed unattractive people (eg. gun culture with small penises) makes me wonder whether they merely attribute these things to lack of attractiveness, or something else is going on.
