If the government is split between two groups of radicals, each embracing a platform that is 180° opposite the other side's platform, then absolutely nothing is going to get done — ever.

Which, in turn, will be detrimental for America as a whole. Which is why we need to transcend the concept of left-right politics, because it’s outdated and has been since the start of the 21st century

This is why we need President Steyer. So electronic direct democracy can result in 20% turnout referendums passing laws that ban lettuce with 51% of the vote.

Hey we can definitely make it at least past the debate.

I dunno about making it to SC. Pete might surprise everyone and beat us there.

United States of Devonta wrote:AFL-CIO South Carolina has come out in strong support of medicare-for-all recently

This is in contrast to the Culinary Union of Nevada leadership who opposed it. A very different Union dynamic in Nevada then SC. Union leadership in Nevada has long been apart of the Democratic machine under Sen. Harry Reid, while in SC leadership is pretty progressive. It's also important to note, a majority of Culinary Union members caucused for Bernie and bucked their own leadership.

Also, in an official letter the AFL-CIO SC called out Mayor Pete's and other public option health care measures by name and stated such systems do not do enough for working class people. This should help Bernie Sanders, even if unions don't play as large of a rule in SC as they did Nevada.

That's great, but I'm not sure if it'll matter much. South Carolina famously has the lowest unionization rate of the country.
It does warm my heart that we have a frontrunner being so fully embraced by unions.

That would be intrastate, which I mentioned.

And besides, the feds have many well-known ways to more or less compel states to pass certain laws. Minimum wage is the prime example of this.

Maybe I'm missing something, I am certainly no fancy, big city lawyer *snaps suspenders*, but a private company charging people for access to services that the government is providing for free sounds like a scam. Like, could I stand at the door of the DMV and charge people $50 to go in?

In other news, Politico Playbook (Politico's newsletter for political professionals) has announced a list of suggested running mates for Sen. Bernie Sanders, assuming he wins the nomination. They are:

  • Cory Booker
  • Elizabeth Warren
  • Nancy Pelosi
  • Stacey Abrams
  • Kamala Harris
  • Ayanna Pressley, the progressive freshman representative who has endorsed Sen. Warren
  • Val Demings
  • Tammy Baldwin
  • Sherrod Brown
  • Andrew Gillum
  • Tim Kaine

I have no clue why Pelosi or Kaine are on the list. The presence of Gillum and Abrams is laughable. The other choices all seem very solid.

Pelosi is older than Sanders by several months, dafaq is Politico thinking here...

Gillum is alright but he some corruption problems while as mayor. I'm surprised Klobuchar isn't on the list but out of those names, there's three that would be the best for him (I boldened them). Personally, Baldwin would be the best for Sanders, followed by Brown and then Demings.

Poor show. It's surely been explained already.

Please, do tell. You go with what is most doable in each country. I find it hard to believe the US could pull it off. Perhaps a system similar to the Germans or Singaporeans would be better? Or you could continue down the road and shape up Obamacare so it actually resembles the Swiss model better. All of these systems achieve universal healthcare. What is the problem with alternatives?

To share my own thoughts on the VP matter, I've been saying for close to a year that the perfect running mate for Sanders or Warren would be Booker.

I'm basing this purely on politics/policy, personalities, and the meme of trying to pick the next president with a VP slot.

The Sanders part of the Democratic Party despises Pelosi and some of those other "possible VPs". Cory Booker is in the pocket of the pharmaceutical companies, so there's no way Sanders is going to choose him. Andrew Gillum is a possibility, I suppose. It's not out of question that Warren would be picked, but I think there's some sour feelings between the two.
