That's a problem with most democracies as far as I can tell. Especially among the working class, since I believe about 60% or so don't vote. I don't like the idea of mandatory voting, even if you barely get fined for it, but I won't deny that's somewhat solved the problem in Australia.
If you were going with the whole class-based message to them, I believe I read somewhere about something like "you don't care about politics? Your landlord does. Your employer does. The rich do. Maybe it's time for you to."
I also don't agree with mandatory voting, but the lack of voter participation is a problem. Democrats have the numbers, if they show up they win. Republican voter suppression also doesn't help Democrats.
