Slashing old age benefits; an accidental carbon tax?

So Trump recently promised to slash old age benefits like medicare and social security.

https://www.cnn.com/2020/01/23/politics ... index.html

Most of the left is indignant at this, but I'm not.

I look at the baby boomers, and I see a generation that never had to pay for what they did to the environment. If we enacted a carbon tax now, we would bill Millennials for their role in climate change, but baby boomers, many of whom are already retired, would have already gotten away with it.

If, however, we slashed social security and medicare instead, we would be taking back from old people what their carbon pollution cost us in flooded towns. So I'm all for it. Slash social security. Slash medicare. They made this mess. They owe us.

What say you, NSG?

Social security was gonna die sooner or later. It just wasn't sustainable with the huge amount of retirees, and the economic situation for millennials and Gen Z, I frankly have little sympathy for the baby boomers who are upset over this. They had wonderful economic opportunities in post WWII America, and instead of saving their money, many of them blew it on a new car every two years, a new Mini Mansion in the exurbs, the newest clothes and all kinds of appliances advertised in Tv infomercials. my father's parents were two of these folks. And when they retired and realized they hadn't planned for retirement, they turned to the generations still working and said "gimme yours." Thanks to both our economic situation and the burden of social security, my generation will probably not be able to plan for retirement at all. The social security scam will die, and the generations that could have saved money for retirement will have had us pay for them while we can't save for it at all.

It may be an indirect carbon tax, but my anger with them mainly is in the fact they should have been more responsible and now we have to take care of them. And then they'll have the nerve to complain about "this generation's issues" and "where have all the good men gone?" The good men fought in world war II, and then you, a child of their's, totally ruined what they fought and died for. If we're gonna end social security, do it now so we can at least save some more money for retirement

What’s with the intense hatred towards boomers lately?

It's because of how entitled so many of them act and how they didn't ever think about the consequences of any of their actions up until now

The problem with SSN is it was not ran as a trust fund but as a loan money to the federal government at low interest rates fund.

It should have invested in the market in part and not solely in Federal bonds.

Social Security needs to be reformed, not outright slashed.

Personally, I think it is unreasonable to hate boomers so much for all being entitled and irresponsible. It's like hating Black people for being lazy and committing so much crime. Yes, some boomers act entitled and irresponsible, but others are kind and very responsible. Likewise, some Black people are lazy and do commit crime while others work hard and live honest, law abiding lives. Judging a whole group by the actions of some is unreasonable which is why prejudice is always stupid.

Agree, stereotyping a group based on the actions of a few is always detrimental to discourse

Preferably, the Trump administration should slash Medicare and Social Security entirely, get rid of it all. The idea that younger working taxpayers should have to fund the proclivities and lifestyles of a retired generation that could have saved up for their retirement and stupidly chose not to is an injustice worst than any other I can begin to imagine. Get rid of both of these insane, utterly morally indefensible and reprehensible programs now.

Not wanting to give someone free shit is not the same as hating them. I have nothing against Boomers who don't steal my money.

I would estimate that approximately zero people in receipt of social security or medicare are in any meaningful way responsible for climate change.

Technically, we're all kind of responsible.

Uhh no, systems like Social Security and Medicare by definition are generational transfer systems, people presently working pay into the system to fund the lifestyles of the retirees at that point in time, then the working taxpayers going old and retire and they get free stuff from people down below, like an endless Pyramid scheme fuelled by new births. So yes, maybe people presently retired paid into the system and had their money stolen by the retirees of their day, they are entitled to be aggrieved about the theft they had to endure, just as I am entitled to be aggrieved about the theft we now have to endure to support their entire generation.

Pyramid scheme? Free stuff? That’s not really comments of knowing the situation.

Instead of shaking your fist at the sky; why not go investigate these old people and see this extravagant life style you seem to believe exists.

I mean, we could examine Donald Trump. He is both receiving social security and on medicare.

It doesn't have to be extravagant for it to still be parasitical sponging. I frankly don't care what kind of standard of living these people are in, what matters is they are stealing the value of an entire working generation's labour to fuel their own personal expenses, an unspeakable injustice by any reasonable standard. Theft is theft regardless of what the thief does with the money or what impact it has on the thief's standard of living.

That they are largely responsible for economic policies that increased income inequality immensely, ending a brief period of general prosperity between 1946 and the 1980's, and then blame young people for not wanting to live on starvation wages so they can eat breakfast at Cracker Barrel.

I'm just pointing out they are both universal programs - covering rich and poor alike.

I say we cancel it for politicians until they retire from public service - like other retirement plans. you can't receive social security while working for the state.

I have to work on my sarcasm skills :D

Make it so politicians don’t get the retirement packages they get. Make them use these services and see all this “free shit” and lifestyles they live.

Tbh the fastest way we could fix medicare is to put Congress on it.
