I mentioned it in another thread.

Troubled rail company Northern is to be brought under government control.
The decision, which will see the firm's franchise stripped from operator Arriva Rail North from 1 March, was taken following years of major disruption.

Economically that might be desirable in many ways tbh.
Singapores government owns all the land, and allocates the housing to citizens if they don't have one, producing a 90% home owner rate. Its schools are vigorously meritocratic and they've got laws to pressure private schools into being mostly public ones for bright students, with only a minority being paid placements.
Adults get free education and funds are set aside for them to train with.
They frequently do automatic "Quality of life" consumer good deposits. This year the government decided everyone needs a HD Digital TV, and so everyone got a voucher specifically for this purpose which the government promised companies they would exchange for money.
None of this is means tested either.
I sorely doubt our government wants to actually be Singapore.

(This is controversial, as some people allege it's crony capitalism and often the consumer goods the government up and decides everyone needs lines up pretty suspiciously with financial interests in bed with the government, however, imo, it's a step above our current "We'll give them money, and you get literally nothing" system. At least in Singapore, they get a free tv.).

It's not too late to get an EU fleg tattoo before the Tories scrap health and safety legislation and getting a tattoo becomes like playing Russian roulette.

I was too busy trying to ponder what mandatory consumer goods would improve quality of life in the UK.
I'm thinking Roombas tbh.
Here, you can get a white goods grant from the government if you're on welfare. Not many people know about it though.
Basically you have to be like; "Hey, I don't own a fridge." and they reply "BUY ONE YOURSELF!!!" and you say "I can't, I spent all my money." and they angrily fish around in their pockets for some change before shoving it into your hands and demanding you show them the receipt within a month or else prison.
The list of goods which apply is pretty broad though and covers basically any essential, including the catch-all, "Other essential white goods".
I got a fridge from them a few years ago by doing it.
But that's not quite the same as the government one day deciding;
"Know what? Everyone needs a high tech, top of the line, two-thousand pound refrigerator. The ones you can run skyrim on. Everyone. Everyone in the country shall have the same fridge. And next year, we'll buy everyone the same television. After that we might decide everyone needs a tailored suit.", etc.

And how do you expect to enter the EU then?
We are making having EU flag tattoos mandatory for entry here.
Council of Europe flags are acceptable too.
I'll get it on my eyeball in fluorescent ink, like a replicant serial number.

You probably actually could. I wouldn't advise it, though.
