Obviously it is a marketing ploy. Ben and Jerry’s is a hippy company only in the respect that is how the market themselves, of course they Unilever are actually a cut throat neoliberal mega corp, with massive ethics problems but many hippies will still buy their ice cream because they say stuff like this.

Of course the idiocy is the UK government (Ben and Jerry’s/Unilever is evil and hypocritical but smart) giving them free advertising. Unilever is well known for using controversy to raise awareness of their brands as an advertising scheme, the UK government responding as it did is exactly what they want, because now many Labourites will be rushing out to buy their ice cream.

I don't see many people in Labour will be rushing to by Ben & Jerrys because of the twitter spat, they aren't that shallow. :eyebrow:

I am sure there are plenty of shallow people in and supporting Labour, just like in any party. It is not like Unilever got to make billions by their marketing strategy not working. Clearly it works quite well. They know exactly what they are doing.

Not everyone will fall for it but obviously many will. And Unilever will be laughing all the way to the bank.

By the same measure I don't think Tories will rush to buy poppers now that Patel has given them her seal of approval, regardless of the fact that one Tory, Crispin Blunt, has already said in Parliament that he uses them.

I like how you are mentioning a decade-old political scandal involving the Labour party and using it to somehow indicate that the House of Lords is bad.

The majority of Lords earn their position through merit, that is to say exceptional service to their country typically in the civil service.

Just because you will never be a lord doesn't mean that greater men and women in our country shouldn't receive the privilege.

PMs award people who serve them admirably peerage all the time. This isn't at all new.

I'm sure that if Jeremy "our friends at Hamas, our friends at Hezbollah" Corbyn were in power, he would afford Lords seats to all of his leftist cronies and IRA terrorists or whoever.

That hardly proves your point though. Sure PMs give peerages to their moneybags and political cronies, but that hardly prove merit unless you think merit is measured in having political connections and paying off politicians.

More like they award peerages because the aforesaid people served admirably in the PMs administration, or served the country admirably as a whole. I suspect only a limited few Lords get their peerages because of money connections as the sole or primary factor, though I will admit that it may be something of a secondary factor.

“Severed admirably” despite many having few accomplishments to their name. Served admirably is a funny way of saying partisan hacks, sycophants and yes men.
A House of Lords actually limited to people with real accomplishments and specialized knowledge might be useful but it would need a vastly different nomination and appointment process. That is senior military officers, diplomats, scientists, doctors, civil service mangers and analysts and the like. Partisan politics =/= civil service. The Civil Service is not parliament.

And your “I suspect” seems less convincing than on the sources she provided.

This is objectively incorrect. The majority of the Lords are people who have rendered outstanding service to our country politically or civicly or otherwise.

A gotcha over autocorrect? Lame.

Oh and probably plenty of people’s heads, at least metaphorically. Going up in politics means taking other people down.
It is a zero sum game.

I think you do not seem to understand the world objectively. How do you objectively prove “rendered outstanding service”? That is a very subjective judgment.
It is not something you can definitively and scientifically measure.

Please show your work, what scientifically agreed on algorithm or measurement did you use to make this determination?

Me too, actually. I think I'd be really ashamed if the leader of my party and many of its most prominent members were frothing anti-Semites.

Thankfully this isn't an issue in my camp.

Though I suppose recognising antisemitism would require you to have some empathy, which I do not expect much from Labour.
