I've never really read much about the subject before now but the more I read the more (if you'll pardon the phrase) its seems like a white wash. That every race was complicit and trying to just hang it on one group of people wilfully ignores the whole truth.

Shout-out to the "statue defenders" up in Newcastle who felt like they had to protect Grey's Monument from BLM supporters. It's 135 ft tall and is topped by a statue of Charles Grey, the Prime Minister who oversaw the abolition of slavery.

The achievements of Grey's government include the 1832 Great Reform Act, the 1833 Factory Act which restricted the use of child labour, and the 1833 Slavery Abolition Act.

Things named after him include Earl Grey Tea, Grey Street, Newcastle (which runs south from Grey's Monument), and one of Durham University's colleges.

It's difficult to see on what grounds his memory should be condemned by anti-racism campaigners given the Slavery Abolition Act, unless it's a belief that the apprenticeship clauses were slavery by another name, or that the compensation clauses unfairly rewarded slave owners.

Ah, it turns out to be the latter - it's because of “reparations paid to white ex-slave owners instead of black ex-slaves”.

However, as that same link points out, while Grey appeared on the first version of the online statue-toppling list, he was quickly removed from all subsequent versions of the list; ending slavery seems to have trumped the 1830s realpolitik of compensating the owners. So if so-called 'statue defenders' were defending Grey's Monument, they were working on outdated information.

I've still seen a lot of people online demanding thing's named after Grey be renamed. Then again these are the same types who want to be rid of a memorial to two brothers simply because they served in Africa with the British Army during the Victorian era.
