The objection to the use of said term is what is holding back the conversation now. You've become what you feared most.
Who's the one really dramatically overplaying?
The one who thinks restricting freedom of the press is "a bit fascist", or the person who think the conversation is going to immediately devolve into calling the Tory's literal Nazi's as result

Not an accurate picture of the discussion. The post that kicked off the discussion literally said "Tory fascism continues", which is a statement worthy of scorn because it's patently ridiculous, and quite far from "a bit fascist" which would have a slightly more ambivalent meaning. What's since proceeded is people sort-of conceding that it's not fascist while also trying to play word games to not fully concede the point and suggest that the people who queried the stupid statement are somehow at fault. All that really needs to happen is for people to stop trying to defend the point and go "okay, but is this bad?" and we just move on to actually discussing the point.

If I may be so bold as to make a suggestion, maybe next time post something like "more authoritarian than fascist necessarily, but I agree, and here's why I think it's bad..." rather than saying it's stupid and derailing the point in the first place.

And it seems to me that cryptocurrency and NFTs and such suddenly have a whooooole lot of shovel salespeople.

The post said that the Tories are fascists, but didn't make any substantive arguments itself for why the move is bad. Addressing the point as made and achieving clarity on that before moving on to related arguments that can be (but weren't) originally made is not a derail, it's proceeding with the debate in a proper order.

I never said the Tories were fascist, I said Tory Fascism continues which are not the same thing.
Plus, it was not supposed to be a serious point of saying the Tories are fascist in anyway.
There is too much thought being put into the pedanticism.

I'm glad that you are conceding the point, but it could do with a little less of the criticising people for assuming that your meaning was what your words said rather than something that they did not say.
