Utah Bans Conversion Therapy

Utah is now the 19th and most conservative state to officially ban conversion therapy. It was outlawed via an executive order by the Governor after a bill failed to pass the State Senate. It is possible a bill might still be proposed in the legislature. Some conservative groups have vowed to overturn the new rule in the next session.

Conversion therapy is a debunked science that purports to change sexual orientation from gay to straight. It has been shown to cause harm to those who undergo it and serves absolutely zero purpose.

Its long past time for this to be banned nationwide and in every country and I hope this comes to pass soon.

Your thoughts NSG?

Laws should be imposed that prevent such therapy from being compulsory in any circumstance, but I don't think it should be completely outlawed.

This is still going on in 31 states. Much like Saudi Arabia legalizing women driving, I find it hard to celebrate because it's goddamn 2020.

If someone wants to voluntarily go, it's not for the state to get involved. Ban situations that violate people's rights but go no further.

It can never be consensual when minors are involved, and while it's arguable that adults can choose it if they want to, it is still fraud.

I applaud Utah on this decision for standing up for freedom, given that countless children and young adults have been dragged against their will into Concentration Conversion Camps.

Exactly. How anyone can watch the film Boy Erased and not think that should be outlawed is beyond my understanding.

I'm all for banning conversion of minors. Children being dragged by their parents shouldn't be allowed, obviously.

Edit: I'm supportive of this current ban. It only seems to apply to minors.

Agreed, give me a reason this isn't a less-lethal Concentration camp.

it has
- isolation
- abuse
- Mengle level mad science

That is a reasonable assessment, Thought invoking Mengele might be a little far. The film Boy Erased shows what conversation therapy is like and how anyone can support it after that is beyond me.

Minors are subjected to abusive environments like these not only in conversion therapy but also for general behavior modification attempts. In most states, parents can still send their children to some kind of "boot camp" or something similar but with more euphemistic names. These places are usually run by fucking nutcases without any qualifications, many but not all are run by religious fundamentalists. There are some real horror stories about shit that happens in these places. That should be banned too, people putting their kids in fucked up prisons because they have an eating disorder or don't believe in God.

Good on them. This should hopefully expedite other conservative states to get around to outlawing it.

Utah has always been a more moderate state.

Indoctrinating youth is fucked up. If you support forced "conversion therapy" for gay kids imagine if the opposite existed. Ya I cant imagine you'd support that. Than again NSers are often radical in their beliefs so....ya one or two of you might.

Ever heard of "Ice Pick Lobotomies" this is Mengele invocation worthy. and Yes, anyone who supports this should not be allowed to have children.

Here's my take on conversion therapy: It's very, very questionable, and is not medically sound. However, it's not the government's business. As such, conversion therapy ought be legal, but only when the patient consents. They can make their own decisions, and if they decide they want to try something to make them straight instead of gay, even if that something is rather foolish and unscientific, it is their right to try that. But parents taking their children to conversion therapy... that's pretty problematic.

Do you think it should be outlawed for children?

Agreed. Though, I think it should be outlawed for children to prevent parents from forcing them to go, while leaving it legal for consenting adults.

I'm fine with this current ban, as all the articles I read seem to imply that the ban only applies to minors. I would be opposed to an complete ban that applies to everyone.
