Centrist Discussion Thread - Stuck in the Middle

Postby Atlantarctica » Wed Jan 22, 2020 11:07 am

The First Centrist Discussion Thread

For the centrists without a home

Hello, okay. So. I've noticed a lack of balance between the left and right sides of the force wing discussion threads. There's no center here! A BIRD CAN'T FLY IF THE LEFT-WING AND RIGHT-WING AREN'T CONNECTED!! But fear not, centrists! I have come to you with our very own home... our very own discussion thread! Here you can talk about centrism, your opinion on it, your opinion on other political philosophies and the political spectrum, the left, the right... Anything as long as it's at least related to centrism in some way.
What is a centrist?

Centrism is, as defined by Wikipedia please don't hurt me is a political outlook which involves acceptance or support of a balance between social equality and social hierarchy without making changes that leans too far to the left or right. This, however, doesn't mean that centrists can lean more towards the left or to the right. It's just that centrists don't lean far enough to either side to be considered a leftie or a rightie.

I know we have a thread like this somewhere. Give me a minute to find it.

Well, shoot, I can't find it. Anyway, unlocking this with the following conditions:

1. Edit the OP to define "centrist"

2. Edit the OP to propose a topic or two to discuss, with an emphasis on what you think the centrist position is or should be

If I'm right centrism seeks to compromise by not veering to far on either side of the spectrum. Why do you here in the centrist thread choose to do so? Not that I don't like that (I mean, I do if you look at my sig but let's leave that for now), but I am generally curious to here. :)

"Centre Wing"? That doesn't make any sense.

I'm a centrist, I examine each issue case-by-case and prefer balance to extremes.

I attribute this to to my Catholic faith.

I'm far from being a centrist although I have a few centrist positions when it comes to gun rights and tobacco policy.

Centrist thread eh, okay, well. As a centrist I have no strong feelings one way or the other.

I'm not really that centrist. I'm just not that far to the left to embrace the more outlandish parts, and I tend to have more in common with the center right than the far left....which means I'm probably center left.

I think that's less left vs right and more like social libertarian vs social authoritarian.

Every time a centrist discussion thread has been attempted, it has slowly withered away within a month or so. This is because centrism is boring and nobody cares about it.

I think it is because centrism is ill defined.

I am center-right but I dislike most right-wing parties and i'm an environmentalist so that pushes me pretty close to center, on the auth-libr side of things I am extremely Libertarian though.

On the political spectrum, I'm firmly in the center. I think that there should be a balance between hierarchy and social equality. I also support state intervention in the economy when necessary.

I bounce around in the left libertarian area. A month ago I questioned whether anarchism could work or not but I've pretty much settled for libertarian socialism of a sort. I think we need some kind of government, but for the most part would like to see society itself become more self reliant. I definitely do not trust our current government to put human rights before selfish ulterior motives

I believe that socialism can exist within the parameters of a capitalist framework. However, I am no socialist, left-libertarian, or even a leftist.
