There’s one confirmed case 20 miles north of me. It doesn’t sound like the guy infected anyone though.

Some scientific details were also released, with the WHO saying 25% of reported cases were developing severe symptoms.
There is a preliminary estimate of the average number of people each infected person passes the virus on to (known as the R0 value) of between 1.4 and 2.5. Any number greater than one means the virus has the potential to spread in the population, but this is lower than the figure for Sars.
And in Wuhan a "fourth-generation case" has been detected - this is a sustained chain of transmission involving four people. It remains too early to call the true extent of human-to-human transmission.

2.5 R0 value. Not great, not terrible.
And for context the R0 value of the 1918 pandemic was somewhere between 1.4 and 2.8, and swine flu was between 1.4 and 1.6. But as the article says, it's too early to precisely calculate the R0 value of this strain of Coronavirus, with the estimate being preliminary.

2.5 would be very bad. 3 would be heading for full on pandemic.
I'm hoping for the lower numbers. I've had regular flu twice this winter and bollocks to another virus.

Yes I hope that containment measures are effective. I'm not sure how effective containment in China itself will be at this point, considering it has already spread to many other provinces.

The horse has bolted. If it's 2.5-3 then how the rest of the world deals with it will be fun.
Still, seems to be a very low death rate so far. Plenty of misery but low mortality is my current bet.

yeah I got worried when I heard from the local news that a possible case of the virus was spotted in a university student in my home town which by my flag you could easily deduce which university that is.

If you're over 60, have existing health problems, and have a Chinese level health care insurance setup then you should be really scared.

well come this summer ill be half to 60 and have good ole Uncle Sam to pay for my health care plus I'm fat, lazy, and have been really sick last year so I guess I'm shit out of luck. the only good thing is I'm nowhere near Chinese just Eastern European. but in my job I am around airline passengers and screen people but we have no direct flights to or from China at the airport I work at.

You have socialised healthcare?
I'm sorry dude. Just make sure your life insurance is up to date. You're doomed.

no I'm on a federal employee version of blue cross blue shield. I do pay into it but its way the hell less then if I bought health insurance on my own. plus I'll probably die from over dosing on Dr.Pepper before I die of coronavirus

.....I can still hear Gig em Aggies sometimes. Almost like he survived his brush with bad flu and having socialised healthcare.
Godspeed Gig em. We loved you. *cries*
