Yeah, the Chinese GP has been postponed as well.

The difference in the case of the MWC though is that it is a major event that isn't even in China that has been cancelled. It's in Barcelona.

"Barcelona on 24-27 February"
"BT, Facebook, LG, Nokia, Sony and Vodafone were among the high-profile exhibitors to have pulled out of the annual event, citing coronavirus fears."
"But earlier this week, Amazon, Sony, LG Electronics, Ericsson, Facebook, and chipmakers Intel and Nvidia said they would not attend the conference.
French telecoms group Orange also pulled out, despite the fact its chief executive, Stephane Richard, chairs the GSMA.
Deutsche Telekom had said it would be "irresponsible" to send its staff to a large gathering with so many international guests."

Wow, almost every firm pulled out.

Seems those firms are taking seriously the concerns from various scientists about the containment of this virus not working, and of it going pandemic.
The event would have started in around 10 days.
It could also be a case of some of them foreseeing a low participation due to virus fears, so they would rather postpone the event to a better time when they can get a full participation. Having an half empty event would be a waste.

The media is been pretty trashy in covering this, yesterday they were like 'infection and death rates drop, maybe we've peaked', today they're like 'record infection and death rates, we're all gonna die..'

Still, one thing that is certainly rising is calls for free speech in China by the Chinese, including sharing the HK protest anthem song, open letters by leading academics and online hashtags that arise quicker than the censors can censor.

This virus has done more for the cause of HK than 8 months of protest.

This more or less confirmed my suspicions. The confirmed cases are only those who have been tested specifically for it, and they have not been reporting everyone who has shown symptoms, but not tested. More concerning, they have only reported deaths thus far of those confirmed to have the disease. Meaning that some untold number have died from the disease and were not confirmed to have it.

The infection rate was never dwindling, it's that Chinese medical staff are overwhelmed to the point that they cannot keep up with the number of newly infected people. They literally could not, and still likely cannot, respond to the disease nor can they confirm every inspected case.

Just last week, everyone was resting on their laurels about how well China contained the disease, and it is now pretty damn apparent it is out of control. And given that China has underreported the infected, we have no idea and likely won't as to how deadly it is.

China has been under-reporting the number of deaths and infections:

Some 242 deaths from the new coronavirus were recorded in the Chinese province of Hubei on Wednesday - the deadliest day of the outbreak.

There was also a huge increase in the number of cases, with 14,840 people diagnosed with Covid-19.

Hubei has started using a broader definition to diagnose people - which accounts for most of the rise in cases.

China sacked two top officials in Hubei province hours after the new figures were revealed.

Until Wednesday's increases, the number of people with the virus in Hubei, where the outbreak emerged, was stabilising.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-china-51482994

Given their previous efforts to suppress information about Corona, I can only conclude that the under-reporting was entirely intentional.

I trust mostly WHO about the outbreak, not China. The censorship is too strict there, and they want to minimize the severity of the outbreak as much as possible.

^no, no, i said. it was not a citation. people has to begin again being reverent to inherent things and science in spite of society and statistics.

i don t say you have to despise..‘secondary’ domains, i find them good when in their role. may be a prove of this, mind has to be kept sharp.

WHO has eaten up any number they received from china until they had their own men on the ground there. (1-2 days ago?)

I still remember when WHO hesitated to declair global emergency, or when they spent more time praising the efforts of china while condemning any other nation for overreacting, even advising against blocking air travel with china.

Two other places outside mainland China — Hong Kong and the Philippines — have previously confirmed one death each.

I don't know; from official tallies, the guy who croaked in the Philippines was an AIDS patient (old infographic for context) who presumably didn't have SARS-CoV-2.

Still, one thing that is certainly rising is calls for free speech in China by the Chinese, including sharing the HK protest anthem song, open letters by leading academics and online hashtags that arise quicker than the censors can censor.

This virus has done more for the cause of HK than 8 months of protest.

"Protesting" is pure virtue signaling. There's no proof that it works. Westerners do it because it's a more dramatic image than dropping a ballot into a box, and Hong Kongers do it because, well, they're all out of other options.

If there's protesting in China then you know some shit is up. Do you have any idea how influenced the mainland is to be "obedient"? If there starts to be mass protests in Mainland china, what are they gonna do murder millions of people? Though Tienanmen Square might have already proved their reaction to these types of situations.

Key word "mainland." They go easier on Hong Kong because deep down, they know it's not theirs to invade.

Also because there's a fuck ton more media coverage. Harder to cover up mowing down hundreds of people in HK. Though that didn't stop them from sending thugs to beat up, kidnap, and (possibly) murder some protesters or even emergency service members.

Nonsense. One of the reasons that the SED was ousted from power in the GDR was because of the mass demonstrations that destabilised the regime to such an extent that the Central Committee started making mistakes, which brought about their downfall.

But Corona is the topic of this thread, not whether protesting works or not.
