Nowadays I'm more concerned with things like crunch and employee abuse in game studios, and predatory monetization efforts by publishers. Beyond that, I just try to enjoy the few games I do still play. Actually recently started playing more games that I initially wrote off due to outrage in the past - Mirror's Edge: Catalyst being one, which I've actually been having some fun with. The original was one of my favourites last generation, but I wrote off Catalyst in 2016 due to some drama around it.

Speaking of games, albeit in the realm of tabletop as opposed to vidya, progress on my post-apocalyptic TTRPG is coming along quite nicely. And to think that this project started with mere shitposts in an earlier iteration of this thread! Remember folks, if you can dream it, you can meme it.

People who aren't white men being main characters in video games (i.e., """identity politics""") was something that happened prior to 2014. For example, the excellent Portal series featured a woman of color as the main character and a female person-turned-robot as the main antagonist (Portal) and secondary sort-of-protagonist (Portal 2).

You misunderstand your foe. There is a very good game out called Bannerlord. It is not made by wh*toids. It is made by diverse people of color. Except it has cool features like "execute enemy leadership" and "loot & pillage innocent village while you put the villagers to the sword" or "fight cool battle with 1000 AIs". The social justice crowd was not content to dominate the political space, they sought to dominate our dream worlds too. The personal is political afterall. Suddenly shoved in were opposition to anything uncomfortable, chat rooms got neutered and anything controversial killed. It didn't end up selling more games though. Because this is the dominate religion, it will be followed regardless if it loses money or if a "diverse" crew of programers can manage to make things work. They have also gotten dumber over time. Before computers for a specialist crowd, now that the general public is in on it, games reflect what the public being dumb and stupid want. Dumb and stupid games. I only enjoy playing these days a mod still made by diehards. The rest of games are too easy.

Games from late 90s and early 00s are experiencing remaster and republishing, because of what you said in your comment. Soon when I get my NEETBUXXX from the British government I will buy Age of Empires 1 Remastered, I am excited.

Honestly, have you ever actually listened to Anita Sarkeesian? She's a really popular right-wing punching bag, but she actually has some good points if you listen to her real arguments rather than out-of-context clips in Thunderf00t videos. I don't entirely agree with everything she says, but she's much more reasonable than you'd think from listening to the popular discourse around her.

I don't consider her arguments especially reasonable or convincing most of the time, and, to address the other point, I don't think most people who play video games have an issue with non-white, non-male characters occupying important roles in their medium. I've always maintained that a big reason people gripe is because nobody wants to get preached at when they're going through a book, movie, or video game that, to them, seems perfectly innocent or like harmless fun. They might well appreciate political or social commentary but it has to be part of a compelling narrative as well.

A lot of what people like Anita Sarkeesian push seems to end in vacuity, unexciting content, and the rejection of previous canon/content that had meaning to an audience and merit on its own for the sake of an ideology that often doesn't neatly fit into that community. In some cases, it winds up creating a sort of warped morality in the social sphere or in media, where we lionize people or characters who are, in all traditional respects and to the lay viewer, evil. That's fine when there's some awareness to it but there often isn't.

I think the reaction a lot of people have to SJWs in gaming is the same reaction they had when the boomers tried to give hot takes on Grand Theft Auto or whatever other games they complained about. I'm not really plugged into this conversation like some people are, but I've noticed that there's a trend in literature towards pushing diversity of authors to the extent that some bloggers have actually insisted that Hemingway offered us nothing worthwhile. It all comes across the same. Philistines and outsiders prioritizing their political views over good stories and compelling content.

I would share the Google Docs file containing the "alpha" version of the rules, but it's linked to my real name so... yeah, no. However, the playtesting sessions have been going well, even though they've been held virtually due to the COVID pandemic. I'm also working on a lore wiki of sorts in order to compile my setting notes into something coherent.

For the record, the core mechanic is to roll 2d6+[Attribute Modifier] with success categories (6 or less is a failure, 7-9 is a half-success, 10-11 is a success, 12+ is a critical success). I shamelessly cribbed this from Dungeon World, IIRC (in my defense, though, the phrase "nothing new under the sun" applies heavily to tabletop game design).

I did not qualify for NEETbux but I did buy three copies of Panzer Corps II Field Marshal Edition for the lads. I had already been doing what you recommended. I forgot how much I missed the old hex games. If you get the chance and you hate yourself, you would like BICE for Hearts of Crippling Autism and Aids 3. It made me more sympathetic to Petain and even Stalin. You'd appreciate the dedication of that group even if that isn't up your alley. Also a big fan of the Master Chief collection. I had forgotten what a decent story was.
