In the UK there are 23,000 homes that have been left empty for over 5 years. Not sure what the stats are in the US, but undoubtedly the number will be a great deal higher than that.

In the UK there are 23,000 homes that have been left empty for over 5 years. Not sure what the stats are in the US, but undoubtedly the number will be a great deal higher than that.

As of 2014 that number was 18,600,000 empty homes and around 600,000 homeless people at any one time.
So there are (again using numbers from 2014) six times the number of empty homes then there people who need a home.

Well, a right to housing isn't in the American Convention of Human Rights, the European Convention of Human Rights, the EU's Charter of Fundamental Rights, I could go on. Each of those instruments, however, do recognise a right to private property, phrased in some form or another.
