What do you mean "10 and a half months out of a year per employee"?

There are 12 months a year. How much holidays does this bill give? Not 10 months right?

I think they mean 10 and a half months a year of work, meaning one and a half months of no work.

That's if my currently tired-ass reading comprehension still works, anyway, I really should go to bed.

Today's selection of HKPF's "professionalism".

Female protester: the chains attached to my waist, wrists and ankles were for humiliation

Published on lawmaker Lam Cheuk-ting's Facebook page yesterday (January 15) was a complaint he recently received from a female protester. Due to her ill health, the female protester has been receiving medical treatment in hospital, under escort, wearing just handcuffs.

Last week, officers of the Corrections and Services Department came to know that she received more than 200 greeting cards during Christmas, they also inquired whether she was a protester, to which she acknowledged.

When she was sent for medical treatment again, she was fettered with chains attached to her wrists, ankles and waist. She criticized the change from handcuffs only to attaching shackles was done deliberately to humiliate her in the public.

Naturally, I don't find that justifiable - if the existing arrangement for her to seek medical attention is to cuff her, then it stands to reason that the police itself finds that to be sufficient in keeping her under custody. Why would her being a protester (which, contrary to unpopular belief, is not in itself illegal... for now) makes her a sufficiently bigger security risk while hospitalised?

Facebook has apologised for translating Chinese President Xi Jinping's name from Burmese to English into an obscenity on its platform.

His name appeared as "Mr Shithole" in Facebook posts shared on the official accounts of Ms Suu Kyi and her office.

A small update from Hong Kong on Sunday.

Ventus Lau arrested for letting too many people into Chater Garden to attend a lawful assembly

Mr Lam, Spokesperson of the Civil Assembly Team quoted his conversation with the police that Ventus Lau, applicant of the Assembly, was arrested for alleged incitement of public sentiment and breach of a specific provision stipulated in Letter of No Objection which states the assembly “shall not over-crowd Chater Garden”.

Lam claimed that even before the Assembly has commenced, Lau had already explained to participants that once the crowd in Chater Garden has exceeded a certain level, existing participants will be asked to head toward Admiralty and disperse peacefully to alleviate assembly traffic so that newcomers can flow in the Chater Garden to attend the assembly. So, it was hard to understand why Lau was still arrested for violating this provision.

Editor’s Note: In August 2019, Ventus Lau was arrested together with a group of rally volunteers in Kwun Tong. The rally also received a Letter of No Objection from the police and Lau was also the organizer.

Source: Apple Daily

Guess it's a crime in Hong Kong if too many people participate in rallies. Or rather, it's a crime for the organisers, the participants, the press and anyone else except the ones making the rallies that big in the first place - the government and the police.

Also, another fine demonstration of the police force's state of mind during the suppression of the assembly.

I was following the news about the protests this Sunday and my understanding is that the police behaved professionally (on the whole). They followed the minimum necessary force principle.

I also understand that the protestors tried to bomb Tai Po police station with explosives.

As for Mr. Ventus, I have every confidence that he will be released according to process if the HKPF decide there isn't enough evidence to press. However, it is possible that he was involved in unlawful wrongdoing.

I'm sure there are good reasons (ex they participated in violent, unlawful protests... took part in rioting... or had shown a previous tendency to attack the police and other staff). But again, I don't have more details. But if it was so wrongful, then western media would have kicked up a giant fuss over it by now.

You would defend the HKPF literally no matter what force it used. If it used tanks and machine guns to kill a thousand protesters you would cheer.

Yes, professionalism and minimum force indeed.

And for someone allegedly living in Hong Kong, you really suck at knowing the local geography if you think Charter Garden is anywhere near Tai Po enough to make the two events relevant.

Why were handcuffs fine the first time, but then they used "chains attached to her wrists, ankles and waist" the second time, after they found out she was a protester?

Police say ‘rioters’ threw four Molotov cocktails at the Tai Po police station on Sunday night, including at the reporting centre which was open to the public at the time.

In a brief statement, police did not mention any casualties, or whether people had actually been inside the reporting centre, but condemned the ‘rioters’ act, saying they had completely disregarded public safety.

It said the petrol bombs also struck the station’s parking lot, and added that officers are investigating the matter as a case of arson.

It added that services at the reporting centre at Tai Po station have been suspended as a result of the attack, and urged the public to dial '999' if they're in need of assistance.

I mean at this point, this is basically terrorism. I mean, literally throwing bombs at police stations.

It amazes me how anyone can still support this side.

I am unsure how anyone can look at this and the past 40 years ersumthing and not feel a certain sense that the Peking regime and its hired gangsters wholly deserves this.

and he was told to stop (and he did), things can situationally get out of hand

you'll rarely find a 100% perfect handling of a riot

"Told to stop", the guy had to get shoved off him by one of the other officers...

I would bet my life-savings on that this particular specimen of authoritarian terrorism was bussed in from the mainland.

Petrol bombs are not explosives, they are incendiary.
