speaking of pigs, carrie lam, at the behest of her puppet government and ultimately her puppetmasters in beijing, has decided to postpone the elections due to this pandemic (no word till when from the articles i've seen, for perpetuity in all likelihood)

overkill, in other words

thia is a time for the people of hong kong to decide whether or not they die as democrats, whether to this pandemic, a cop's baton, or a soldier's tank -- or live as cogs, grinding along to xi's moves till one day they are dust in his footsteps

carrie lam obviously loves being a cog, but then she's a pampered bitch in a sinecure, and so the puppet half of legco

what, then, people of hong kong? what is your choice?

edit: postponed till next year; point still stands, of course

While there is a worrying surge of COVID cases in Hong Kong right now, it's also obvious that a year's time will be very useful for Beijing to further suppress the opposition. This election may be the last even slightly democratic one in Hong Kong's history.

What I have seen many people forgetting or ignoring, though, is the fact that Hong Kong was far from democratic under the UK. The first (very) indirect election to the Hong Kong Legislative Council happened in 1985 (after the Sino-British joint declaration) and the first popular election happened in 1991 for less than two thirds of the seats. The first fully representative and democratic elections happened after an electoral reform in 1994. Those driven by blind nostalgia to support the British rule (which was, however, more tolerant of dissent than the post-2020 HKSAR government) would do well to consider the history.

Edits for spelling.

Glorious Hong Kong wrote:Hong Kong security law: Four students arrested for 'inciting secession'

Four students have been arrested in Hong Kong in the first police operation to enforce China's new national security law for the territory.

The four were detained for "inciting secession" on social media after the new law began on 1 July, police said.

A pro-independence group said those arrested included its former leader, Tony Chung.

Beijing's controversial new law criminalises subversion, secession and collusion with foreign forces.

Previous arrests under the new law have been made for slogans and banners at protests.

Critics say China's new law erodes Hong Kong's freedoms. But Beijing has dismissed the criticism, saying that the law is necessary to stop the type of pro-democracy protests seen in Hong Kong during much of 2019.
What do we know about the arrests?

Three men and a woman aged between 16 and 21 were arrested on suspicion of organising and inciting secession, police said.

"Our sources and investigation show that the group recently announced on social media to set up [sic] an organisation that advocates Hong Kong independence," said Li Kwai-wah from the new national security unit inside Hong Kong police.

Computers, phones and documents were also seized, he said.

The students were former members of or had links to Studentlocalism, a pro-independence youth group. It was disbanded in June before the new security law came into force and said it would continue to campaign from abroad.

But Mr Li said overseas activity could still be prosecuted.

"If anyone who tells others that he advocates violating the national security law from abroad, even he does that from overseas, we have the jurisdiction to investigate these kind of cases," he said.

Photos posted on social media showed Mr Chung being led away in handcuffs in the district of Yuen Long.

Studentlocalism said Mr Chung was detained at about 20:50 local time (12:50 GMT). Police officers also took away items in several bags, the group said.

Prominent rights activist Joshua Wong said Mr Chung had been followed by police for several days. He said Mr Chung had been arrested for writing a Facebook post on "China's nationalism" and alleged that the detainees' phones had been hacked shortly after their arrest.

"Tonight's arrest will clearly send a chilling effect on HK online speech," Mr Wong tweeted.

Hong Kong postpones elections for a year 'over virus concerns'

While it's true that British rule in HK was initially racist and degrading toward locals, oppression and discrimination eased up significantly over time, particularly after WWII. Chris Patten is still widely revered in HK to this very day for his very extensive package of democratic reforms. The entire political system in HK both pre- and post-Handover should be completely overhauled and replaced with a UK-style parliamentary system with proportional representation as the method of electing MPs and a Prime Minister as the city-state's leader. See this nation's Factbook (link in the sig) for further details.

Surely I have broken this law a ton of times, and apparently it applies everywhere.
Although I will break it again for good measure, fuck Xi, fuck Lam, free Hong Kong from PRC tyranny, down with the criminal CCP and DAB, sanction them globally.

Now I am a criminal for sure. Of course the cannot enforce on me but that is irrelevant.

I've actually considered visiting Hong Kong over the last few years (one of my parents visited with her parents as a child), but there's no way in hell I'm going any closer to the PRC than Japan until it dissolves.

Also, delaying elections for a year?! Surely they are aware that mail-in voting is a thing, right? That's such a flimsy excuse.

Once someone brings up mail ballots, they’d either allow election to proceed and tamper with the results, or use the excuse that a force other than them will tamper with the ballots.

Police in Hong Kong are seeking the arrest of six pro-democracy activists living in exile in Western countries, including the UK, media reports say.

The group reportedly includes former UK consulate worker Simon Cheng, well-known activist Nathan Law and US citizen Samuel Chu.

Well quite, no one believes a word she says but, frankly, it no longer matters whether anyone believes her or not, she and the CCP will continue to do as they please. This rise in infections is due to her allowing transport personnel to wander around the city as they please for no apparent reason, even her own health department has admitted that while she and the China media tell everyone it's due to the democratic primaries held.

We all knew the elections would not happen this year, they don't want their little narrative that everyone in HK is happy to be disturbed by reality.

It's all lies, we all know it's lies, there's nothing we can do about the lies because, in the end, they just don't matter.

There are ways to make your point without actually engaging in the uncivil language you used here. You could have simply stated all the things that are illegal in those countries, without actually posting that sort of language. read the Rules and get a clue.

Also, delaying elections for a year?! Surely they are aware that mail-in voting is a thing, right? That's such a flimsy excuse.

The Chinese authorities are full of shit, but there's no reason to be so ideological about a simple visit. If you are just visiting as a tourist -- not going there to protest or proselytize -- China was safe to visit before the coronavirus hit, and it'll probably be safe again when the pandemic blows over. It is not North Korea. You don't have to agree with a government to visit the country.

Right at this moment in Hong Kong might not be the best time and place to visit, but that is no reason to avoid the whole country on a long-term basis.

And would you seriously have a problem visiting South Korea just because of crap that's going on in China? (It is closer than Japan.)

Tell that Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor. The PRC is not above taking foreign visitors hostage for political purposes. I will never willingly set foot in Hong Kong or the PRC as long as that lunatic Xi remains in power either.

Even if the risk is low (only because they do not know I exist) I am now a criminal there, and besides I do not want to give their government more money to build weapons and surveillance equipment.

Boycott the PRC.

Make nearly everyone a criminal and you can arrest anyone you do not like and think is a big enough threat. Typical Stalinist stuff.

They can not enforce it on you, till you fly into Hong Kong, or any other nation China has by the balls based on trade policy.

Hence why anyone who has ever said anything regarding China or Hong Kong in a public forum should probably avoid travel there or to third-party countries that are really friendly with China, due to the possibility that the third-party country might extradite you to China.
