Let's be realists here; the only way we're ever going to un-fuck our current situations are if our politicians start thinking less about the economy and more about ecology. The environment has been destroyed only because greedlords rule the countries of the world!
I'm looking at you, America.

Yeah, that's all they care about. The economy over our very survival.

I still think we're at least a few years (but probably more) away from things getting to the point where those in power, and the general voting public, acknowledge that the economy might need to suffer if that's what it takes to slow climate change.

I wouldn't be too scared of 2020 though. We're not at the point of economic collapse or starvation, at least in the developed world.

It's hard for me to get out of the mindset I described, in an unending spiral of hopelessness.

There is a way to keep the economy powerful while fighting climate change, it’s called nuclear power plants, specifically thorium power plants. Quit using fossil fuels and renewables and go fully nuclear.

There are other factors that may have an greater impact on your personal life and wellbeing for the better or the worse than the general state of the world. You could tomorrow fall in love and have the greatest time of your life while the world around you is being engulfed in flames.

You could be living in an alternate and much better timeline, and being depressed and caught in your own personal hell and be entirely oblivious to anything around you.

True happyness is to be found within, and life can always take turns to good or worse tomorrow regardless of global circumstances.

Meh, that's life. Sorry to sound rather unbothered about it, but I predict an obvious prediction that you and I are going to live for many more decades to come so worrying about next year isn't a productive thing for me to do. I'm not a happy, optimistic person like other members of my family, I'm a sad, negative person. Why you ask? Well because even when something goes right for me e.g. I get a degree or I have a Happy Christmas, I know that every second somewhere else on this Planet an innocent child is dying from starvation or murder or via another horrible way through no fault of his/her own. When I was a child, I was really happy when I did well in exams, when I had fun with videogames, when I had nice birthdays etc. but now as an Adult in his mid-twenties, I see the World in a different perspective, a perspective that may seem negative to some but is nevertheless a perspective of being realistic. We all live in such a strange World, a World where it's impossible for every innocent human on this Planet to be happy for the rest of his/her life and where the offspring of these humans can live on in happiness for eternity...there's always someone suffering...I've already mentioned the innocent kids, and there are always innocent homeless people suffering cold and alone in the harsh, bitter winter while many of us have the luxury of having a gleaming, warm, bright Christmas in the knowledge that even the full extent of our charitable donations won't entirely end the suffering. In that knowledge, I just trudge on in life. Sure, jokes may lighten me up occasionally, I can feel the occasional happiness when I'm with friends and family, that's part of my humanity, but the bigger picture shows that this World will never be perfect. We're all going to die one day, and our planet will cease to exist, it's inevitable. We just trudge along and enjoy as many snippets of life as we can in our lifetimes, that's all we can do, and I like it that way, I think immortality is perhaps not a good idea. The occasional personal financial gain, job happiness...those things are small in the long run and not relevant and not things that can keep me permanently happy in my opinion. Sorry to sound like Eeyore but it's just my take on things :) anyway I do wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

Calm down there! You should not worry so much. What will worrying accomplish? Try to enjoy life.

The world isn't going to end, but it's rather obtuse to think that climate change isn't a very real problem which will have some serious long-term effect. One needs to be rather blind not to see the changes occuring already.

I think you'd better look a lot farther East (or West?)...the US' gross carbon emissions are falling steadily and are now at 1990 levels despite an increase in population of 80 million people. China is the most egregious polluter on the planet by far.

From the US territory of Puerto Rico. Yes it sounds strange. How can the US be having an economic boom, that's what the news services say, and us in a long recession. Go figure.
