Who should have been Person of the Year?

Among the options given, and all things considered, the Hong Kong protesters definitely should have been the Persons of the Year.

Greta Thurnberg deserves nothing.

The person of the year should arguably be whoever just became a Billionaire this year with their brilliant business or whatever. Most people know that becoming wealthy, is the greatest accomplishment anyone could ever do. Its even more impressive when a billion is an ungodly sum of money which secures someone against a lifetime of risk, expenses, bad decisions and more. Even the most reckless spending would surely have a hard time burning through it all.

In real life, you're either winning via making money or you're losing via remaining poor and getting left behind, if not going into debt or staying within negative net worth.

HK protestors. It takes a huge set of balls to stand against the Chinese behemoth. They, or that kid (I forgot his name) who built a ship which scoops up the plastic from the oceans. The more important question that can be asked is: where will Greta be next year? The answer is: nowhere. Greta is just a little meme factory which the media have picked up and decided to use as the holy Mother Mary of Saint Climate. I'm in favour of protection of the environment but never, at any point in time has she done or suggested anything that was even remotely practical to actually help the former. She's a media controlled puppet who will be forgotten within a few months. Google Severn Cullis Suzuki. How dare you? Pffft. Go home and go back to school Greta. If you really want to make a difference, go and study and come up with a solution, rather than just sit there and whine make memes.

Genuinely curious, how would the Hong Kong protestors be collectively awarded the Person of the Year award? Has a group of people been selected for the award before?

^ if I had to nominate an individual not named Greta Thunberg, I'd probably go with Isobel Yeung. The TikTokian who posted that makeup video would be a close second

Yes, several times actually. Last year it went to journalists. In 2011 (or 12? I forget) the award went to The Protester. In the 1950s it went to the Hungarian resistance. In 2015 or 14 it went to the people fighting Ebola.

Person of the Year should have gone to Parallel Universe Greta Thunberg. She's a neurotypical fossil fuel lobbyist who started a movement in which kids go to school on Saturday just for the sake of burning extra fuel to get there.

I'd go with the Protester, but I think the New York Times did that already.

Because let's face it there's been a lot of protests this year.

But as I pointed out in the Greta thread, some of those protesters were protesting things that the New York Times supports therefore they can't do that.

I'd support Rojava too but they couldn't do that because that'd piss off Turkey.

I forgot that last year they gave the award basically to themselves... yeah Greta is an improvement.

Yeah, she's clearly taking as big of a risk yachting around the world as the HK protestors are opposing a totalitarian regime.

Hey, don't forget that they're actually striking from school and putting their education at risk while the Hong Kong protesters literally get raped, run over, get shot and die for fighting for universal human rights!

Greta Thunberg winning doesn’t cause me the slightest inconvenience, climate change is a more significant threat than anyone else on the list has dealt with.

Idk I’d say human rights and getting shot and raped in the street is pretty serious

You think you're talking about Hong Kong, but that could be literally dozens of other locations.
