Get used to it.

We're not going to control the pandemic!

It is a slaughter and not just a political dispute.

"The scraps of narcissism, the rotten remnants of conspiracy theories, the offal of sour grievance, the half-eaten bits of resentment flow by. They do not cohere. But they move in the same, insistent current of self, self, self."

It's like the Nobel Peace Prize, It's not exactly measured by objective standards, and people frankly get far too worked up over who does and doesn't get it. (looking at some of the absolute monsters who've gotten Peace Prizes should make people realise that it's not measured by anything objective fairly quickly, Kissinger, Teresa and the like, but for some reason it doesn't tweak).

As I said, it's nothing to get worked up over, and she has been a person of significance in a global movement this year (I have my own issue with people who try to almost treat her like some kind of deity or try to suggest she says things that she doesn't actually say, but that's a separate issue).

Her whole point is, "listen to the climate scientists". That's a perfectly sensible position to get behind.

Did she actually make those comments about “patriarchy, colonialism, and imperialism”?

Don't know. Don't care. Don't spend every minute of my day obsessively following her stuff so I can then fake outrage over it.

For people who tell us not to listen to her, the right-wing loves to spew outrage over every little thing she does and says. Methinks the fixation some people have on her as personification of their every hatred is hugely unhealthy for them.

No, it's that most of us don't want some bratty rich kid moralizing to us and acting like some sort of authority, but your strawman is well noted. Another reason is that there are so many people more deserving of the title, who weren't chosen. Just like with the Nobel peace Prize 2019, except that one ended up with someone deserving getting it. Abiy Ahmed, for ending a brutal war between Ethiopia and Eritrea.

And how many people have heard of him?

The award isn't "For best contributions", it's for "causing most headlines, good or bad" Causing headlines doesn't actually necessarily measure up to work done.

Though it's worth noting that the people who whinge about her getting airtime over the actual scientists are the same people who don't give a flying fuck what the actual scientists say on the same issue, and haven't for the last fourty years. It's virtue-signalling at best and manipulative concern trolling at worst.

So did a million scientists. Why didnt they make the cut? Only reason I can think of is they arent spoiled rich white teenage girls who got to be a mainstream media talking point. How about Neil degrasse Tyson instead? He brought up the same thing years earlier and has spent a career educating people and uses him fame for generally good causes.

Because nobody listens to him either. Did you actually watch her speech? Her whole damn point was that she shouldn't be the one making the argument, we should listen to the scientists. It's just that the people who have a go at her for not being one are the same people who dismiss what the scientists say on the question every other day of the week until they want to concern-troll and basically call her an abused cretin.

Toxic Coal Smog incidents have gone as far back as the 12th century.

We've been lighting shit on fire and cutting down forests for all recorded human history and you want to tell me that suddenly that became bad all at once?

Nope, it's always been bad, we just weren't doing it often enough for it to matter all that much until now.

As for people who quibble that we don't know what exactly is releasing that much CO2, actually we do. We don't even need the models or projections for that, hard observable spectroscopy means we track the unique energy signatures emitted by CO2 (think like DNA links at a crime scene) and can trace the source from which it was emitted.

The Greenhouse effect is documentable by simple, observable science, for all that the deniers try to dismiss the modelling and the projections, we actually don't even need them to prove it. It's very simple chemistry coupled with hard physics

Do people actually, truly put faith on these popularity contests? I mean, I know this meant something many years ago but have you seen who have won Person of the Year in the last few years?

Either way, hate her or love her, Thunberg had people talking and feeling uncomfortable about a very real issue. I don’t know that it was worthy of person of the year but it’s not like many people take this as seriously as it once was.

On the basis that you seem to be unwilling to properly address climate change with the full seriousness it deserves. That includes making sacrifices to some rights in order to future proof the state and society when faced with the inevitable social upheaval climate change will bring.
