Modern Germany. It’s an interesting place, has respectable influence throughout the world, and has done the one thing its predecessors never could: firmly integrate itself into Europe’s framework without any fear of hostile neighbours or rejection by the great powers. Not to mention that life there is probably better for the average citizen than anything in the past, national glory aside.

I think Prussian militarism was cool and that the German Empire had fascinating aspects, but I think the same for the Galactic Empire. I wouldn’t want that irl.

I prefer the German Empire because it was ruled by Protestant Hohenzollern monarchs, but I also am sort of leaning towards the Holy Roman Empire because I dislike excessive industrialization and like Medieval, Baroque, and Rococo aesthetics. Of course, modern Germany has gender equality and same-sex marriage, so I guess it is not entirely bad.

It was a true mix of modernity with a balanced bit of traditionalism, sensibility, and respect for the warrior class.

Many of the demonstrators in '89 actually wanted that, rather than the total collapse of the nation and reunification as such. If the SED had actually implemented some reforms then it would have considerably lessened the demonstrations. But instead the fact that the DDR didn't completely deStalinize in the 1950s came and bit them in the arse, as they went down the route of sending troops to Leipzig (which were only kept at bay by the local SED bosses countermanding the orders of the party Central Committee), using the Stasi to arrest demonstrators which further alienated them, and making cosmetic changes like removing Honecker and putting Krenz in his place (the demonstrators hated Krenz only marginally less than they hated Honecker). The SED also started pissing off their allies by censoring any mention of Glasnost and Perestroika, and it also pissed off rank and file party members who thought that such censorship was driving a wedge between themselves and the USSR.

I like most of the Germanies, but, I'd have to go with the current one as it represents triumph and prosperity, even when it had gone through the war reparations of World War One or the Treaty of Versailles in general, devastating inflation, and suffered through the evils of Nazism and Communism. Current Germany is one of the most economically powerful nations in the world, and it's very touching that they were resilient enough (of course they had help with the Marshall Plan and other sources of humanitarian aid) to rise and prosper again. However, most of you may know a lot more about Germany than I do.
