One Billion Euros Worth of Jewels Stolen in Dresden

Postby San Lumen » Fri Nov 29, 2019 9:05 am

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/ ... ult-museum

Thieves broke into the Green Vault at the Royal Palace in Dresden, Germany and stole nearly one billion dollars worth of jewels. The heist occurred earlier this week after a fire broke out at an electrical distribution point nearby, deactivating the museum’s alarm and plunging the area into darkness. There are fears the irreplaceable jewels could be damaged or even destroyed by the thieves in an attempt to sell them as they are too well known to be sold on the black market.

Whenever something like this happens it is heartbreaking. Its not just theft its robbing your countries history and the ability of future generations to admire. Why would anyone do this? It would be like stealing the Mona Lisa or the Crown Jewels. There is simply no rhyme or reason for it and it hurts the entire country.

Your thoughts NSG?

They see a chance to make a buck. Either a collector will buy these for 1/10th the value (100 million) or they will melt them down and sell the materials for 1/1000th the value( 1 million).

If they sell it to a collector there is a chance his kids or grand kids return it after he dies.

You can’t be serious. Why have any museums at all by that logic?

Yeah let’s steal and destroy irreplaceable parts of our countries history and culture for cash. Only a truly selfish person would do something like that

Would be a shame if it ended up at an American museum.

Germany doesn’t have art and other historical and cultural items worth preserving?

There are great pieces especially from the HRE era. This is sad.

Yeah, probably.

Why are you acting so shocked about this? People steal things, preferably valuable things, because they want money. Have you never encountered this concept before? Why do you think people rob gas stations or liquor stores or banks? Money's really useful and they want it.

Clever operatives, a daring plan well executed and nobody got hurt. I'm having difficulty suppressing my admiration for clever thieves.

What part of your countries' history do the items stolen enshrine?

Well, you can’t really destroy a country’s history via a jewel heist. I imagine Germans figured out that “writing” business and recorded their history in a number of different physical and electronic devices.

While it’s kinda shitty, it isn’t a huge or even irreplaceable loss. As someone mentioned, if they’re sold to a collector instead of broken down, then there’s a chance of recovery.

Well, Gutenberg (a German) did invent the printing press…
