Damn, this Coronavirus really has the markets worked up: Dow lost almost 1200 points today; so far about 3000 for the entire week! I feel Trump doesn't like that.

The robots are nervous.

That's all I can think these days when the Dow does a shimmy like this, all the trading is done by robots who all fall down the same hole and then hit the same triggers to go back up. The Dow as a reflection of investor confidence is kind of over, now we're just checking in on how the algorithms feel.

On the other hand, part of the reason that it's all done by robots is that they're better at predicting future investments than humans are, so it's arguably a slightly stronger indicator in that regard than it used to be.
