Of course he doesn't want to increase testing. I imagine he wants to decrease testing. The less data we have on infection rates, the easier it will be for him to present everything as fine, when the reality could be wayy more dangerous than that. The more testing done, it looks as though infections are increasing (when they're not, we're just getting a better idea of the scope of the problem we already have) which he wants to avoid.

So, the thought process is, less testing = appearance of fewer cases = everything's fine = we reopen = approval for the Donald. Though like I said that's a stupid and dangerous way to look at it.

Notably, increasing testing - especially once we can test for antibodies good - will most certainly decrease the mortality rate.

Of course, if we test we can track and then treat (if necessary). However, I think the US government would, if they could, go down China's route of downplaying this as much as possible, lying to the public about infections and mortality rates, and generally trying to make everything seem fine.

Okay, sure, granted. But there's a spectrum of possible reactions. The most sensible of which would be a fine balance, a "this isn't good but we're doing everything in our power to make it better" would be the most sensible, but the administration is resistant to even that narrative.

Instead what we've been seeing is "these lockdowns are overreactions" and the like. Actively trying to suppress accurate infection data is decidedly too far on the "make everything seem normal and okay" side of the argument.

But it's generally good to act like there is a global viral pandemic if there is, indeed a global viral pandemic going on. That's the trick, to neither downplay the crisis, not overplay it. But right now, the Trump administration is massively downplaying.

It's good to act like the building isn't on fire. Until the building is on fire.

Or you could just be honest. Our infection rates are dropping and deaths are too, but it was still really bad.

Oh I'm sure there's bound to be at least one sooner or later. The mentality of a solid chunk of conservatives in the US have is best summed as "fuck the expert", anti-intellectualism, or an extreme version of rugged individualism. I have little doubt that this will lead someone to do something really stupid and get hospitalized at the worst moment.

Hopefully none, seeing as how everyone from doctors to the media to disinfectant companies are very loudly shouting down Trump's latest moronic medical treatment.

Trump behaviour during this crisis might be his undoing.

Unlike other things such as the impeachment or the russia drama which was pushed by partisan democrats and could be generally be filled under "meh politics" this is serious. And I believe a lot of people, who were formerly neutral or mehish about it will now turn against Trump and the GOP.

I disagree with your characterization of the impeachment scandal and the general corruption and ineptitude of the administration of "meh" politics, but as I already outlined, this issue is definitely starting to work against Trump. A lot of that, I think, are the tangible and direct consequences of the administrations failings on your average American that simply were not there when there wasn't a global pandemic about.

Apparently he got the idea from the largest industrial bleach company touting it as a miracle cure, which actually fronts as a religious group. They've been pushing bleach for years and sent multiple letters to Trump.

Grenon styles himself as “archbishop” of Genesis II – a Florida-based outfit that claims to be a church but which in fact is the largest producer and distributor of chlorine dioxide bleach as a “miracle cure” in the US. He brands the chemical as MMS, “miracle mineral solution”, and claims fraudulently that it can cure 99% of all illnesses including cancer, malaria, HIV/Aids as well as autism
Since the start of the pandemic, Genesis II has been marketing MMS as a cure to coronavirus. It advises users, including children, to mix three to six drops of bleach in water and drink it.

In his weekly televised radio show, posted online on Sunday, Grenon read out the letter he wrote to Trump. He said it began: “Dear Mr President, I am praying you read this letter and intervene.”

Grenon said that 30 of his supporters have also written in the past few days to Trump at the White House urging him to take action to protect Genesis II in its bleach-peddling activities which they claim can cure coronavirus.

On Friday, hours after Trump talked about disinfectant on live TV, Grenon went further in a post on his Facebook page. He claimed that MMS had actually been sent to the White House. He wrote: “Trump has got the MMS and all the info!!! Things are happening folks! Lord help others to see the Truth!”

30 letters about bleach, sheesh

Likely this event was showcasing the President’s terrible humor, which I’ve heard is quite vulgar.

This makes me wonder about the mail President Trump gets regularly.
