While things like better availability of child care and more tax breaks would help, I doubt they would reverse the problem. Unless you can make a child a net income producer, or undue the women's rights movement, I think that a bellow 2 birth rate is all you can expect, and if you can achieve children as an income producer I would be worried about how the children are being cared for and developed.

The idea isn't necessarily bad, it's just how would it get implemented that has me worried.

I mean, something like that is not a terrible idea.

I wouldn't go as far as Hungary, but one of our critical problems is that having a child is really expensive and people don't feel like they can hack the cost until they're financially secure, and then they're old enough they have trouble having kids - struggling to have one instead of easily having three. We really need to explicitly subsidize having children much more than we already do, and try to make it so parents don't have to worry that they're not financially secure enough to have kids, and wind up putting it off until it's almost too late.

I'm pretty sure this is the only reason Republicans haven't actually proposed something like it: they can't figure out how to do it in a way that ensures it will only go toward rural white women.

Typically, they should be considered equal parents. IE, when the kid "pops out" as you say, there is both a mother and a father who have equal claim to raising the child and getting the requisite government benefits. There's a few exceptions with things like sperm banks and surrogacy where legal paternity/maternity is disregarded, but generally, men and women should have equal access and responsibility when it comes to raising kids, and equal receipt of the government benefits.

In fact, this should be the default treatment - unless one is sexist and thinks raising children is women's work, or women are default responsible for children alone, or something stupid like that.

He deserves a lot, he downplayed it all, boasted it was taken care of, sent out mixed messages including downright incorrect messages, his faff'ing around between federal and state responsibility is a total lack of leadership and his general grandstanding while attacking anyone who criticises him is wasteful.

He has been a disaster of a leader in this.
