People aren't created equal, and you treat people with courtesy and respect because it is advantageous to do so (i.e. it makes you feel good, you expect to be treated that way in return, it makes you look good in front of others, etc.).

Yes. Treating people with respect and courtesy 1) makes me feel good inside and 2) helps ensure I'll be treated the same in return. Both of those are gains for me.
