Perez? He was barely polling 13% the whole time...I'd have swore blind Lasso was going to be runner up.

Still, it was quite close between the two of them. Perez got into the runoff by just under 6,300 votes over Lasso.

Colombia is announcing amnesty and legalisation for over 1 million Venezuelan migrants in the country illegally: https://nos.nl/artikel/2367901-colombia-wil-honderdduizenden-venezolaanse-migranten-legaliseren.html

Also, we're learning more about how Ecuador voted...Lasso has so far only won in the Galapagos whilst his CREO party's come in fourth in the Assembly vote behind Arauz's UNES, Perez's Pachacutik, and the Democratic Left.

In a couple of days, I'll update my little post for the runoff and make a link in my sig for it...and then, on to Peru, and the mess that is. I may have to make as many as eight profiles for the candidates on that one because its so close apart from Forsyth.

It’s like the reverse of America. Since Venezuelan refugees will vote right wing, Duque’s right wing party will want to give them amnesty to help them stay in power

Looking at the remaining major tickets, Urresti's supporters may well go to Keiko Fujimori whilst Forsyth's will scatter all over the place. Salaverry's got a good chance to get the lion's share of them, but I want to wait to see what the polls say over the next week or two.

Haiti's in trouble again

A dispute over when President Jovenel Moïse's term ended has led to an alleged coup attempt (including by a supreme court judge), mass protests, allegations of dictatorship, and forcibly retiring judges.

Meanwhile, in Ecuador, we were wrong again, which is to say right the first time, Lasso's pulled ahead for the number two spot by 33,290 votes over Perez, and with only 16 more polls to be counted, he'll be against Arauz in April.

Well, that second article certainly isn't editorialized at all. Mexico (like the US) has increasingly embraced natural gas for electricity ever since US fracking flooded the market with cheap, plentiful gas. I don't think anyone in either country ever supposed that cold temperatures would completely break the efficient distribution of natural gas, but the party that's really failing here is Texas and the Texas gas industry. Mexico has mostly been able to make up for lost supply by increasing production at other plants in the country. Meanwhile it looks like Texas is still scrambling to fix the problem.

The whole thing about Mexico "rejecting renewables" is overblown too. Mexico gets more of its electricity from renewables than the US. The refinery mentioned in the article isn't intended to increase overall fossil fuel consumption in the country; it is because Mexico produces more oil than it can refine, and they want to avoid spending money on exporting crude oil to be refined abroad and then reimported.

But, I'll still blame everyone for going crazy about natural gas. It's an interesting example of the interconnectedness of countries that people often don't notice.

Meanwhile, down in Ecuador, Perez is now crying fraud, and indigenous communities plan to march on Quito: https://www.eluniverso.com/noticias/politica/ni-suenen-que-vamos-a-apoyar-a-guillermo-lasso-dijo-yaku-perez-quien-sigue-mencionando-que-le-hicieron-fraude-y-que-van-a-seguir-hasta-mostrar-la-verdad-nota/

He says its impossible for Lasso to have come as close as he did, and doesn't seem to be waiting for the recounts to finish.
