They conveniently waited until now to have news outlets cover the phenomenon so that people wouldn't grow to outright hate them. If they didn't cover it now, people won't be as focused on other citizens rather than the government.

I don't really think this has been covered in a systematic way. The media has covered athletes kneeling for the anthem, but that's a separate albeit related matter. And they covered that as soon as people began noticing it. And the sorts of people who lack loyalty to the political community often deserve less regard than critics who actually value it and their fellow citizens beyond more narrow communities. You can love America while thinking we need criminal justice reform or have deep-rooted problems with racism and racial inequality. You can think those things precisely because you do love America and all of its citizens.
