Umm... no. While the pledge was created in an alternate form in the 1890s, it wasn't widely used until the rise of Nationalism in the 1930s. So it's concurrent with the Nazis.

The pledge in it's modern form didn't exist until 1954. Not exactly pre-Nazi.

Pledges were created by countries way before then, whether the roman military sacrament or a British Oath of Allegiance created back in 1455 enacted by King Henry the fourth, while it wasn't like all kids would say the pledge during schooling it still existed, not to mention back then schooling was considered a luxury as a majority of the population back then were poor. So in it's modern form yeah it's recent that's why it's called modern.

It is what it is. I never stand through the pledge. I’m not American. Don’t feel like I should. I think it’s more disrespectful to be hypocritical and stand during it if you don’t feel like it. But like you said, you do have the freedom to choose.

No, i'm not in a private school, I just don't want to risk ruining my reputation or getting in trouble. Besides, I don't really have a reason to press any charges. Too much hassle.

Why are you going to be upset about standing for the flag but then not actually do anything? Because it's too much of a hassle? Really?

I'm upset because they're forcing me to do this and I can't really do anything about it. It's a lot of hassle, for very little gain. I lose more than I gain doing it. I'm not going to commit social suicide by making a big deal out of it. Besides, usually I just stand there silently. The one time I sat down I was busy with some work.

If you have to force patriotism or love for country, of any kind by forcing people to pledge, that’s rather silly.

We shouldn't have to do anything in the first place. That we had to affirmatively act to avoid a loyalty pledge as minor students is itself concerning. If you want to swear such an oath, do so, but don't make it part of the daily ritual.

I was under the impression that SCOTUS ruled several years ago that if you object to say or stand during the pledge, you have that right and can’t be forced by school authorities to do anything.

Let's not pretend that there are never consequences for not standing, since there were Supreme Court cases on exactly this.

Yes there have been schools that attempted to force students to stand which is in fact illegal, but you should never just assume your school is going to do that just because a few other schools did.

What happened was a teacher came up to me and said "hey u gotta stand for the pledge", and I said "no, I'm busy and don't feel like it", and she said "but u have to, it's for respect" and I said "but i don't want to" and she said "u don't get to choose" and I said "i thought this was a free country". And this time she left me alone, but I don't think I could do it again.
