Why do dogs always smell so unpleasant after literally any time outside?

I’ve been dogsitting for a family friend and took their dog out for literally 2 minutes, then came back inside and all I could smell was that weird musty smell dogs get sometimes. Either I have a sensitive nose or something’s up because it was so overpowering
