This feels like the better option, at least under a Chilean-like dictatorship we wouldn't feel constantly under threat of the poor threatening class genocide unless we give them X or Y.

well yeah you'd feel constantly under threat of being thrown in a cage and tortured by the military unless you give them X or Y, while also having to worry about the commies trying to grow support and coming for you anyway

Got another idea!

Ryanair nhs!
Going to hospital is free, but you have to pay for all the added extras, like being treated...being treated this week...being treated well...getting the correct treatment...anaesthetic...the syringe that delivers the anaesthetic...the plunger that goes into the syringe that delivers the anaesthetic...

The Notorious Mad Jack wrote:The UK is a party to the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights and has been since its in-effect date of 1976. Article 11 imposes upon signatories a number of rights based around the concept of 'an adequate standard of living', including the rights to adequate food, housing and clothing. Article 12 recognises the right of everyone to "the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health". Article 13 recognises the right of free, universal and compulsory education at the primary level immediately, and at the secondary level eventually. It also mandates that this must be available without discrimination. Article 13 also recognises the rights of freedom of education, protecting parents choice's in where their child goes to school and this provision is also essentially why the government couldn't ban the likes of Eton from operating, as well also requiring states to respect the academic freedom of staff and student.

Human rights is a much bigger and wider subject than just 'freedom from being shot in the face by the government' - and more people should know their rights, before the Tories try to take them away.

This treaty that hasn't been passed into UK law yet, right? There are a lot of treaties we've signed and ratified and then left on the shelf, in international law we're bound by it though.

The rights enshrined by the treaty have been adopted into UK law by a number of acts, but no, there is no single specific law implementing this treaty. We are bound by its provisions - and in 2016 the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights examined our implementation of the ICESCR and found us wanting in a number of areas.

Maybe your ancestors shouldn't have stolen their land and taught you that the profits of that exploitation were justly yours instead of something you need to give back before learning an actual skill to get a real job then mate.

How about this:

We'll take all your property and ban you from moving about, then demand you work in a shitty job in a factory we own with a 40% chance of dying to sustain yourself instead. You can starve, or sign the contract.

But the second you sign, we'll teach our kids that it's too late now and this is obviously "An approximation of a free and fair market agreement" because "Well some trades have happened since we stole all their shit".

Sound good?

Obviously that doesn't sound lovely, but I'm never gonna have to be in that situation.

There is an out of control trolley speeding towards Jeremy Bentham, who is tied to the track. You can pull the lever to cause the trolley to switch tracks, but on the other track is Immanuel Kant. Bentham is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Critique of Pure Reason. Kant is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Principles of Moral Legislation. Both men are shouting at you that they have recently started to reconsider their ethical stances.
