I agree, but if you read every political philosophy into that high level of abstraction you would end up conflating a lot of different social movements into one. Again, I don't think consensual BDSM should be illegal either, just like I don't think sodomy should be illegal. I just don't see why the LGBT Pride Parade not wanting it to become a BDSM Pride Parade is such a bad thing. They are still separate communities, one is an immutable community fighting for a right to exist, the other is a group of people fighting for sexual behaviour not to be criminalized. Yes, I get it, both concern sexual autonomy, that doesn't mean you need to merge the movements into one.

The roots and history of both are very much linked.

There is an out of control trolley speeding towards Jeremy Bentham, who is tied to the track. You can pull the lever to cause the trolley to switch tracks, but on the other track is Immanuel Kant. Bentham is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Critique of Pure Reason. Kant is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Principles of Moral Legislation. Both men are shouting at you that they have recently started to reconsider their ethical stances.

Major-Tom wrote:I should be in bed since I oughta wake up in a few hours for a red eye flight, but I guess all I can say is that I hope the next run around Labour fundamentally changes their strategy to something that can upend the continuous Tory rule. This wake up call, this absolute rock bottom for them, might just make 'em realize how much they have to radically realter their course, even it means going against the sort of ideology I'm normally 100% in for.

They can't just count on Boris Johnson shooting himself in the foot - he's like teflon, it doesn't usually stick. They need their own leader who radiates charisma while keeping a balance between mobilizing the left-wing, demsoc base, while somehow not alienating the mushy middle. It'll take a miracle, but I pray they can pull it off.

Maybe it's the multitude of IPAs talking, but I'm confident they can pull it off if they just avoid two things;

First, avoid Jeremy Corbyn for the next election.
Second, nominate someone who can appeal to a wide electorate without coming across as a fucking opportunistic stooge.

It'll be an uphill battle.

It shouldn't even be that hard. It's not hard to find vaguely electable people, it's not hard to wed leftwing economic policy with a sensible manifesto in other areas, it shouldn't be hard to win against a deeply unpopular Tory govt led by Boris Johnson

This debate feels like a gigantic red herring to me. I've already made it clear I don't think BDSM should be illegal or that anyone who practices it should face discrimination in society, so its not as if I'm supporting discrimination or a double standard here between the LGBT and BDSM communities. Not sure what more you want me to say.
