Unionism has always been more conservative that Irish Nationalism in NI, always been has for the most.
I chalk it up largely to NI's history, with the Irish Catholic community being the victim of heavy sectarianism and discrimination at the hands of the government and thus at its core, being more liberal leaning, due to our own struggles for civil rights and equality.
Especially amongst SF and "Other" party voting catholics, Most conservative Catholics (The ones more likely to be opposed to abortion and SSM) would vote for the SDLP last i checked.
