Our Stormont assembly is back up and running, so we have a government again after three years.

has the 1,000 day reign finally come to an end?

1,089 days total last i checked

And yes we have a government now, here are the new ministers:

Image

DUP: 4 (First Minister, Economy, Education, Agriculture Environment and Rural Affairs)
SF: 3 (Deputy First Minister, Communities, Finance)
SDLP: 1 (Infrastructure)
UUP: 1 (Health)
APNI: 1 (Justice)

Total breakdown of MLA's is unchanged from last election so:

Executive:
DUP: 27 (U)
SF: 26 (N)
SDLP: 12 (N)
UUP: 10 (U)
APNI: 8 (O)

Opposition:
GRN: 2 (O)
PBP: 1 (O)
TUV: 1 (U)
IND: 2 (U)

Nationalists (Total): 38
Unionists (Total): 40
Others (Total): 11
Speaker: 1

The Alliance party, SDLP and UUP might move into the opposition in the future

Surely a deputy first minister is a second minister?

i bet labour will stay with ‘labour’ policies, and not reshuffle again. see u.s.a. where two Sanders and Warren of four, with Bloomberg and Biden, do.

in u.s.a. then, other faction has grown strong immigrant issues. in europe and uk you have not ius soli, so you will take ‘labour’ and not ‘growth’ faction.

First Minister and Deputy First Minister are literally the same role in the executive, despite the name difference, one is not subservient to the other and they both have equal power and responsibilities, the term deputy is used purely for differentiation between the two offices.

Reading back the last few pages, I have to say, I'm genuinely surprised that, save for one or two posts, there isn't more discussion and debate on here about the unprecedented step of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to "step back" from their essential royal duties (and their upcoming crisis meeting with Her Majesty), in blatant and flagrant violation of royal protocol and their essential responsibilities. Akin to the abdication crisis, this latest radical step, portending a most unnecessary constitutional crisis, evinces a very troubling disrespect on their part for Her Majesty's position, and is likely to undermine the prestige and institution of the British royal family by undercutting all the roles, responsibilities, and functions that come attached with being members of 'the Firm'.
