ABC News apologizes for airing fake Syria bombing footage

By Jessica Chasmar - The Washington Times - Monday, October 14, 2019
ABC News apologized Monday after broadcasting a fake video claiming to show Turkey’s military bombing Kurdish civilians in northern Syria.

During Sunday’s “ABC World News Tonight,” host Tom Llamas played footage “appearing to show Turkey’s military bombing Kurd civilians in a Syrian border town.” In reality, the video was taken during a military gun demonstration in Kentucky and published to YouTube in 2017, Gizmodo reported.

ABC News told Mediaite in a statement Monday that the fake video was also broadcast on “Good Morning America.” The network said it had launched an investigation into how the footage made it to air.

“We’ve taken down video that aired on ‘World News Tonight Sunday’ and ‘Good Morning America’ this morning that appeared to be from the Syrian border immediately after questions were raised about its accuracy,” the network said. “ABC News regrets the error.”

Also known as "How to produce propaganda to rile up support in this hellish timeline so we can continue sending people to die in the middle east".

The title is courtesy of a Redditor, but the more important issue is the fact that ABC news produced straight-up propaganda, and "apologized" when they got caught for doing just that. Nevermind the fact the reporter acted like a pompous ass berating the president for those sweet number of clicks they would get for this stunt later online. Honestly, I shouldn't be surprised by them doing this stuff given how polarized American society is these days. The media justified the Iraq war like it was the next big production on broadway, why wouldn't those same people do it here? Anyway, what do you all think of this nice little screw-up?

For the comparison footage.

How do you know that ABC weren't duped into showing the footage?

This isn't duping as in the manner of the NTSB intern releasing names of obviously racist jokes to KTVU news following the Asiana airlines incident. The footage was not only edited, but the reporter was primed to make a point. If he had been more measured as Gayle King was during that infamous meltdown of R Kelly then I might buy it was a screw-up.

Its a joke about where those who leave the alphabet agencies of particular importance end up after a few years of retirement.

You ever wonder why people are getting less trusting in the media?

You are right, and it has been like this probably since Reagan, but now agencies are a lot less subtle about this. At least local news agencies seem to be confined to their area of interest and do actual reporting...for now.

Huh? I mean... What's the propaganda?

This seems to be more amusing - they couldn't tell the difference between a gun show and a war zone - than nefarious.

As the Primary source says:
Turkey is indeed pushing into Syria and slaughtering Kurds along the way, but the video ABC News played last night is from a military gun demonstration in Kentucky that was published to YouTube in 2017.

To be clear, there’s no question that Turkish forces are currently slaughtering the Kurds, as countless journalists and civilians on the ground can attest. But this particular video is fake and it’s a shame that it was broadcast.

As much as I distrust the corporate new media, this seems more like a case of them not doh g their due diligence than trying to make fake propaganda or anything.

Also that title is something else.

Doesn't strike me as funny as ITV using game footage in a documentary thinking it was real footage of the IRA shooting a helicopter.

Ahhhhhhh you are a trumper?

Sorry the whole “fake news” mantra is just Donnies shitspew.

The rush to print is the more likely candidate for the problem. Have to be first after all. Remember Dan Rathers downfall? Rush to print and it was a mistake.

ABC has done the due diligence and apologized.

It’s interesting you go on about the media and start your op with a washington times article.

That's what I was gonna say. I mean, wasn't the Washington Times founded by that cult leader... what was the name... Moon, I think? Sun Moon? That guy. IIRC he founded the Washington Times.

The question mark explains the purpose of that sentence.

Trumpers go on about the “fake news” all the time. Even my Trumper relatives fall back on “fake news” when the can’t argue the fact checkers.

Alright, I don't know why TBF is trying to make this a trump based argument but here is my take on ABC's fuck up. During the airing they used language that suggested they were given the footage from an outside source. Although I dislike ABC, I am inclined to believe that this was a simple fact checking fuck up on their end. If this is the case, I expect them to take more time to bring forward the truth and to have greater journalistic integrity which I view as a good thing. If this wasn't the case, I would like to see Knob Creek take up a civil defamation case against ABC with the hopes of forcing better fact checking and integrity with the news.

I don't exactly support the president, but if you the reporter are going to go on "Karl Rove salivating over the fact Obama won, and he couldn't call him an *insert slur here*" style rant on him make sure the video isn't a spook.

Edit: Okay maybe I am being a bit unfair to Rove, but the man had a damn meltdown on election night.

Defamation of the automatic weaponry enthusiasts who attended the event at Knob Creek and the event organizers, I don't think anyone wants to get footage of themselves construed into a narrative they don't support. If my likeness popped up in a misconstrued video, I whole heartily would get an attorney and strive for better fact checking.

Did ABC claim Knob Creek was massacreing Kurds?
