Not just a pardon. A fucking promotion directly over the wishes of his chain of command.

Not exactly a promotion. The court-martial demoted him, Trump restored his previous rank.

To be clear, he wasn't pardoned. He was acquitted on the most serious charges, and I believe this to be down to a...curious, shall we say, lack of witnesses willing to testify against him, and because of his conviction on the least serious charge related to the desecration of a corpse he was demoted. Trump has ordered that he be re-promoted, to the apparent displeasure of the Navy, but his conviction stands.

Just reading through Trumps list of pardons. He's actually pardoned 3 soldiers found guilty of murder. He pardoned this guy in May.

Why should there service matter over committing crimes? You are very much implying that soldiers should be above the law. That is a very dangerous door to open

I am sorry if it looks the way you are describing it. Again, I would not support an automatic pardon for all military service man who commit a war crime. But a US Court of law sentenced them to x time in Prison and a US President Pardoned them considering their overall service record for America ( the USA) and I understand the President's reasons for Pardoning them. I would understand it under the particular circumstances I have stated. If it were Republican President Bush the second, Democrat President Bill Clinton, Democrat President Barack Hussein Obama or President Donald J Trump who Pardoned them, despite the fact they deserve a long Prison sentence or the death Penalty in the case of the one who killed the 15 year old boy.

There is no reason to have pardoned them. Their service record is irrelevant. You do the crime you do the time.

Been reading through some other Presidents pardons and commutations. What is the point of a life sentence with 10 years supervised release? Are they going to send people to the grave for 10 years to make sure they're still dead?

Then why not just give a number of years? In the UK you get life with a minimum tariff of X years.

Well, we have "life with a possibility of parole" and "life with no possibility of parole". In the extant case, I'm assuming it was life with a possibility of parole, which in most cases has a minimum of 7 years I believe (someone correct me if I'm wrong). If he gets paroled though, he gets another 10 years of supervised release after the parole.

That would make more sense.

But I prefer my idea of a chap visiting a grave every week for 10 years to check on a clipboard "Yep, still dead".

For executed prisoners you fire a bullet in their grave for those ten years instead. Just in case.

Bah, I'm far more experienced at slacking than that. I'd have figured out an algorithm to solve the travelling salesman problem in a week so I could get the checks done as quickly as possible then never told my boss.

You either do or you don’t. You can’t take both sides. Either military service trumps committing crimes or soldiers are tried and do time like everyone else.
