Either way he sounded somewhere half way between being doped up and the "gun to head" tone he had when he had to condemn the Charlottesville Neo-Nazis.

He'll trash talk Iran and the Democrats in the same sentence. Might even let slip a few things.

Seems we’ve subverted war for now, the same cold war in the Gulf will continue between Iran and KSA, though, now without Iran’s strategic mastermind

Just how important was this guy in Iran’s geopolitical game? I know he was the main one who orchestrated all of Iran’s foreign policy decisions, but will his death be a severe loss, as in his replacement won’t be able to be as efficient or smart as he was?

He had immense symbolic value to the Iranians and to Shiite militias in Iraq. He proved himself to be strategically and tactically competent when he coordinated the recapture of Kirkurk from Kurdish separatists and he has been a constant thorn in the side of coalition forces since 2003. The guy was a pretty big deal and this could change things.

I doubt he would hog all the brain for himself knowing he was wanted. The second in command probably picked up a few things.

Mhm. And we weren't really too dumb either.

We just need to sort out how we're going to handle the soft stance offered by the Iraqi government. We can ignore it or we can employ it as an excuse to withdraw.

Perhaps, but his replacement won't have the same reputation or symbolic value, at least not initially.

Seems we’re safe, this was a really close call, one of the few times Trump was actually competent. What’s extremely relieving is that all the main neocons and warmongerors had been fired. To think what would’ve been happening today had Bolton still been in the WH…

Given the US's current leadership, this is difficult to say. I'd be surprised if no previous US president had the chance to kill high ranking Iranians. Trump however is stupid enough to do so on a whim.

If Iran continues the trend of backing down and we can soothe the Iraqi government, Trump will arguably have moved towards accomplishing a major geopolitical goal, especially if Iran knows they can expect retaliation every single time they escalate their proxy war against us by killing American citizens. Do I think Trump is some genius playing 4D chess? Not really. Boldness, even to the point of stupidity, does have merits at times though.

One thing Iran has not backed down on is their nuclear program. Admitting they don't want war with the US is admitting they don't have the means to prevent US invasion … yet.

If they abandon the nuclear deal, the Euro governments might grow a collective spine and tank their economy. Iran's economy has already shriveled by ten percent.

Back to where it was under sanctions before. Apparently it grew by 12% when sanctions were lifted.

It's surprising to me that trade with the US is that important to Iran. Medicines perhaps? But it's not oil, Europe would be a better customer.

Oddly enough, the US imported more oil from Iran than one would expect. A monoculture can't afford to lose any customers.

Is it particularly good oil? I was under the impression that an oil exporter could always find new customers just by cutting the price a little.
That's without sanctions of course.
