There was definitely a concrete gain in killing him. Doing nothing as a foreign power kills your people because you don't want them to kill more of your people is the textbook definition of appeasement.

He was one of Iran's most experienced and talented military minds. The replacement will not have the same pedigree or status.

Yes, well ...

The guy who wrote the article linked above wrote:One day they may name a street after President Trump in Tehran. Why? Because Trump just ordered the assassination of possibly the dumbest man in Iran and the most overrated strategist in the Middle East: Maj. Gen. Qassim Suleimani.

Think of the miscalculations this guy made. In 2015, the United States and the major European powers agreed to lift virtually all their sanctions on Iran, many dating back to 1979, in return for Iran halting its nuclear weapons program for a mere 15 years, but still maintaining the right to have a peaceful nuclear program. It was a great deal for Iran. Its economy grew by over 12 percent the next year. And what did Suleimani do with that windfall?

He and Iran’s supreme leader launched an aggressive regional imperial project that made Iran and its proxies the de facto controlling power in Beirut, Damascus, Baghdad and Sana. This freaked out U.S. allies in the Sunni Arab world and Israel — and they pressed the Trump administration to respond. Trump himself was eager to tear up any treaty forged by President Obama, so he exited the nuclear deal and imposed oil sanctions on Iran that have now shrunk the Iranian economy by almost 10 percent and sent unemployment over 16 percent.

All that for the pleasure of saying that Tehran can call the shots in Beirut, Damascus, Baghdad and Sana. What exactly was second prize?

Mr. Friedman yet again shows how little he understands of the world and how it works. This is the genius who keeps telling us that "entanglement" will beat the country harvesting organs from concentration camp inmates and any day now they will love democracy if we just open up enough to them!

He approaches this through the lens of a Western instead seeing Iran's objects as they would. The game of that fine general undid the trillions we spent and flipped the balance of power in the ME. It was an astounding achievement. Then he even convinced the US to arm his proxy militias.

In the eyes of a state structured for his religion, the cost was well worth it. They simply don't care about things Westerners do. They'll gun their own people down or send them over minefields with plastic keys (so they can get into heaven) without hesitation.

Also his timeline of events including the Iran deal business, as if the Iranian expansion started afterwards is completely wrong. We lost that Baghdad far earlier when thought the Dawa party, funded by fucking Iran was a good idea to have run Iraq. The Syrian civil war and Iranian aid started in 2011-2012. Shia militias flooded Iraq under his direction to save the show in 2014 after the Iraqi army collapsed. Yemen has been ongoing since March 2015 and the Iran deal was July 2015. Trump would have left the deal anyway, no allied pressure was necessary. Friedman total distorts the time of the events to fit his garbage narrative. I should expect no less from a man who can't figure out the total bankruptcy of his ideas in the past 20 years. He'd rather manipulate and lie than face reality.

It is as they say in other parts of the web, an article that could dedicated as peak cope.

When I say the only time an EC system worked as "intended" was when Urho Kekkonen won the Finnish presidency with 259 votes out of 300 vs his main opponent's 25, what does it say about my contempt for the relic of the British gentry class?

The 1980 US Presidential election was a blowout of similar proportions. 489 to 49.

Perhaps a constitution that can be amended without a miracle?

Perhaps too easy tho. The government can simply pass a bill and it's changed ..?

Or maybe because FPTP EC's as devised by the English gentry are inherently broken in the age of political parties.

This is the Presidency you know. It's a single office so, EC having a role or not, it's going to be FPTP.

Would be better with a transferrable vote I guess.

For the record, I prefer Prime Ministers who can be removed by their party, to Presidents who can't.

You can’t use STV for a single office.

"Language is man made" is a gross oversimplification of a poorly understood origin story, at best. It's also terribly misleading.

So, humans have a right to communication since the ability to communicate is an innate, inherit, and direct byproduct of human sentience. Guns are indirectly made from human ingenuity, they aren't in the same category of rights.

Um, making better weapons is an innate, inherit, and direct byproduct of human sentience - of which guns are a part.

Much like posting on the internet is an innate, inherit, and direct byproduct of human sentience which created language, and technology that allowed us to throw it much further.

Reports on social media that Iranians, regardless of citizenship status, are being detained at length and questioned intensively at US border crossings and ports of entry. Dozens of Iranian-Americans were reportedly detained at the US/Canada border as they returned from an Iranian pop concert in Vancouver. This is CBP allegedly acting in accordance with an order from DHS.

its not likely true I work for DHS and never heard jack it could also be people trying to spread fear and distrust among the CBP and try to get the people turning against them.

Would you expect to hear about directives given to other agencies?
it could also be people trying to spread fear and distrust among the CBP and try to get the people turning against them.

It could be that CBP have decided to detain Iranians just by watching the news. Point is American citizens are being detained at the border for no good reason.
