North Korea deserves whatever famine it gets. The common peasant of North Korea does not. The good news, I may add, is that North Korea is so restricted and obsessed with autarky that there's a high chance that it will become a de facto quarantine by limiting potential pig exports that could infect other nation's pigs.

It's not the only food shortage they have though is it? They've had a really bad drought this year.

Its the lack of Rice that will kill them. Pork is likely reserved for party members only.

My understanding is that even with this, and the drought, the food situation is nowhere near as bad as it was in the 90's.

This is mainly going to slow NKs barter economy, as food hoarding sets in.

It hasn't started in NK, it's already across the region as I've linked a couple times above. The issue is not larger pigs it's that pigs have become homogenised so there's no variety and thus no resistance to the disease.

I'm not saying it will make it worse, but the fact that China is actually doing so points to how much pork they are consuming. There is a lot of demand for pigs and that will make an outbreak worse.

Yeah so they're already consuming reserves and the state media is messaging that actually everyone should eat less pork, not because of the swine flu, the extent of which they're trying to hide, but for health reasons. As it is pork prices have risen to the extent that many can't afford it anyway, especially with tariffs on imports.
