Assad’s entire ideology is a united Syria, similar to the union during the American Civil War. Him abandoning the Kurds would be a betrayal to the ideology his party was built upon
That in itself is admirable as I admire the persuit of civic/patriotic unity in a nation, though the fact of him being a middle-eastern dictator does overshadow that to say the least; I certainly hope that he doesn't plan to copy his fellow-Ba'athist Sadam in relations to the Kurds.
