It's been true that the middle east's leaders have been terrible for decades. The fact that the YPG has to go to Assad as the 'next best guy' is an example of how bad their neighbours are.

That in itself is admirable as I admire the persuit of civic/patriotic unity in a nation, though the fact of him being a middle-eastern dictator does overshadow that to say the least; I certainly hope that he doesn't plan to copy his fellow-Ba'athist Sadam in relations to the Kurds.

I suspect it's the latter, since the YPG are were much closer to Washington in terms of cooperation. Turkey is a NATO member but other than that they're just doing what they please.

If only certain EU member states weren't so virulently xenophobic to the point that Erdogan's threat to let immigrants loose cows them.

The problem is that because some EU states are so xenophobic, Erdogan's threats affect not only those countries but those who have taken in refugees as well, like Germany, because they bear a disproportionate burden. If every EU state took in a proportional amount of refugees relative to their population, no single country would be over capacity, even if more refugees came via Turkey.

America has also failed to take responsibility by taking in some hundred times fewer refugees than Germany despite 4 times the population and being the richest country in the world. All of the EU should do their part, but even the whole EU should not have to do it alone.
