Well yes, but I don't see how that is an answer to the other person's claim that Turkey is a valuable ally.

Simple, they can't be allies because they beat up American protesters in America.

Well, that and Turkeys attack on US troops are both deliberate "shows of strength" by Erdogan. Who honestly does not give a fuck about being an ally.

And - Erdoğan has survived in power for 16 years by doing such ham-fisted shows of strength, by doing something that could actually provoke a real response? Please.

Well, to let a strategic ally fall because off that is harming on the long term.

Doesn't mean what they did should go unpunished, but to say that they are a bad ally for that - I disagree with it. Turkey buys US arms, they're on a strategic location and they're have some limited shared interests in Syria until the Obama administration.

I'm saying we should be weary of having an ally like that. Turkey tries to suppress even international criticism. Through, admittedly, our current bar for admitting allies is very low.

I was going to say that. It's a bit odd to be complaining about Turkey when Trump is cozying up with Muhammad bin Salman and so on. Then again, you didn't all vote for him.

Like we didn't all vote for Erdoğan. Just a reminder.

wow, they must be desperate.

It's worth mentioning that despite its officer corps being hamstrung, the Turkish Armed Forces is quite experienced, having fought the PKK for more or less forty years. That's not to say it's a superhuman fighting force, obviously, but still, it's got the funding and it's got the experience in the region.

I wonder what the Turkish Armed Forces capabilities are. They took 3-4 days in encircling and taking two villages of 10.000 people. Quite a long time if you ask me. Only infiltrated the M5 highway merely in four days.

Yes, but tell us, how would you actually put that into practice? So you've done away with Erdoğan in a coup d'etat, he's either imprisoned or executed, his "Islamist goons" are - assuming you've come up with an operational definition for that - are also imprisoned, executed, or otherwise unable to participate in politics...

...you do realise that's literally what the Republic did between 1923-1980?

"Islamist goons" in this case basically means any politician affiliated with the AKP, MHP, or the cabinet of Erdogan. As for how I would initiate the democratization of Turkey, I would have rescinded all of the draconian laws, restrictions and decrees Erdogan enacted to strengthen his power (Such as the latest 2018 "anti-terror" law which de-facto perpetuates the state of emergency or the amendments approved in the 2017 referendum that transformed Turkey into a presidential republic), release all political prisoners and journalists who were persecuted by Erdogan's regime (Including Selehattin Demirtas), abort the offensive in Syria and halt all aid towards the FSA, and hold a emergency snap election with all parties and candidates allowed to campaign unmolested and to their fullest extent in order to transition towards a duly-elected civilian government.

So, apparently the Turkish air force bombed a civilian convoy fleeing south from the border and the Turkish army shelled some villages too.

I thought the Assad regime were critical of both sides- Turkey for crossing its boarders and Rojava for splitting up the country. It makes you wonder what the price was for this alliance.
