First, I think Harry Truman had the right idea during WWII; we should've let the Soviets and Germans beat the hell out of each other. Withholding aid and our own military attacks should've been so organized as to either side from gaining an upperhand as much as possible, while in the process exhausting each other. Once this became unsustainable or it became clear one side was going to win regardless, we could've then jumped in and ended the whole thing. Given we were going to inevitably end facing one or the other in a Cold War, this seems like the smartest strategy to me.
Next, I likewise think General Powell and LeMay were right during the Cuban Crisis. Strategically, the USSR was beyond weak with U.S. intelligence at the time speculating the U.S. had a 17 to 1 advantage in nuclear arms; the reality was actually much higher in favor of the United States. The Soviets had only recently deployed the SS-7, their only missile capable of intercontinental ranges, and only had 20 in total. With a CEP measured in miles combined with a 15-30% failure rate, it's unlikely more than a few-if any-could even reach the United States particularly thanks to all the NIKE missile batteries around strategic American targets in the day. Likewise, the Soviets had about 165 bombers capable of reaching the United States.....against over 1,000 interceptors of the Air Defense Command, three radar lines, Texas Towers and the like. Also, NIKE and BOMARC could be used against bombers too.
We could've crushed the Sino-Soviet Bloc within 24 hours, ending the Cold War and Communism right there with minimal American losses.

IIRC, gasoline has an expiration date. I mean, the setting's [CURRENT YEAR] is 2525, so it might be a tad late for motor vehicles. I mean, I can see the usage of bicycles and horses and such, even trains in the few industrialized countries of North America, like the Pennsylvanian Hive. I can't see cars and motorcycles, though.

Gunsmiths would exist, yes, although perhaps the firearms of 2525 would be a tad... simpler than what we have nowadays. A "blast from the past" if you will. At most, I can see WWI and (maybe) WWII era firearms as (relatively, mind you) common among "civilized" factions.

Seeing what has happened after the Cold War and all the degeneracy and decline that has followed I don’t think ending the Cold War that early on would have been a good idea
