Perhaps once, but Poland's experiences over the last 200 years are rather traumatizing, from occupation by Austria, Germany, and Russia before WW1, of sudden independence, of being subjected to the Holocaust, German occupation, partition between Germany and the Soviets and then subjugation under communism.

Ancient history is important, but so is recent history.

Christianity has been essential to the construction of Polish culture & identity for hundreds of years and this strong merger of religion and nationalism can still be observed today.
