Most rich people only donate to charity because it tax deductible, ie, they're money hoarding. (Besides, most of what I want to donate to should already be covered by my government, but isn't because, you know, rich money hoarders lobbying the government)

But yeah, sure, why not? Outside of a decent house, some hobby stuff, and inheritance for my kids/money for my friends, I can't really think of what to do if I had enough spending money that I'd be counted as rich.

I'd use it to establish a good source of income that I could use to maintain a reasonably comfortable life for myself and any future family. Once I'm certain I have a sustainable financial future, I'd begin charity programs centered around housing the homeless and preventing suicide. Feels like those two things are often neglected by the gov't here in the U.S.

Assuming the $580 million from the OP:

1: A nice house on a large parcel of land, possibly made of shipping containers. Designed with an open center courtyard, with solar power, rain catchment, and an underground bunker/gaming center linked to the internet with the fastest possible internet connection. A private shooting range would also be included.

2: Go back to school to learn how to work on vehicles. Not for a job, but to work on my own vehicles.

3: Start a car/truck collection.

4: Start a true firearms collection.

5: Pay off the debts of my immediate family, and set up trusts to supply my remaining family and my friends with financial security.

6: Invest heavily to keep the money rolling in.

7: Open a free to join (for grade school up to college students) maker space, with top of the line equipment and materials subsidized.

8: Donate to several charities, such as the American Diabetes Association, American Heart Association, Cancer Society, etc.

I'm sure there's more, but that's a good start IMO.

1. You are still losing money with a charitable donation, at best you are only paying 1 dollar less in taxes for every 3 you give away.
