Donate most of it to Burma to help develop rural and poor areas. I will most likely do it myself, since... you know, the government is, let's just say that they are not too reliable with money. Either I do it myself, or I give it to a trustworthy NGOs.

And also maybe I will save the rest to buy some of the things I really, really want - some nice camera lens, slide rules (I collect those things, I'm a weirdo, I know), a top of the line desktop tower with all the latest parts, etc...

How rich are we talking? Rich relative to a college student or relative to a high-range CEO?

Buy a cheap new house in cash, and just not do anything at all.

Depending on how rich we're talking I'd buy a lot of land out in the middle of nowhere and go totally self sufficient and then spend the rest on things that interest me. Building a movie collection, getting tons more books etc.

Put the money in a good investment fund, so future me can have more in case he wants or needs that much.

Also make a nice (not necessarily expensive) car collection, learn how to play the drums and maybe start collecting records.

Live in the same house since it's damn near paid off and pretty much live the same way I do now. Start a firearm company, use money to fight gun control laws/repealed, invest, enjoy life as I see fit.

After paying off my student loans, I'd probably spend the rest of it on ordering food whenever I'm hungry. ;) Maybe also buy all the DLCs in CK2, expansion packs in The Sims 3, and hell, a new laptop too.

If I were to suddenly come into wealth tomorrow, let's say 500 million pounds sterling I would donate 10% of it to the Roman Catholic Church and various charities and lobbying groups here in the UK such as ones pertaining to wildlife, air ambulance, local youth groups and think tanks such as MigrationWatch or lobbying groups like the Countryside Alliance.

I would then buy a nice house and car for my mum and siblings along with tasteful furnishings and make sure they could live comfortably.

Now, being still a university student and in the student officer corps of the British Army I would continue these but buy myself a nicer dwelling up at university along with my own car and set aside fairly substantial funds for me to enjoy my life fairly well, buying nicer food and more clothes or myself along with other things. I'd also set aside a hefty sum for decent holidays and trips. The rest I would invest into low-risk assets and access them after leaving the army and buy myself a nice plot of land in the Cairngorms or Carneddau Mountains and have myself a quaint and sizeable cottage on which to raise a largeish family, a handful of cattle, sheep, geese, pigs and ducks. And I shall spend the remainder of my years smallholding, hunting and hosting dinners.

The same thing that I already do with extra money. I'd invest, and make even more money.

Some might call me greedy, but they should be more thankful for the tax revenue that my avarice will provide.

Depending on how rich I would be, I would like to do a variety of things if funds permitted it. Buy off my parents mortgages, clear any debts they have, create a nice retirement egg nest for them. Create emergency funds for my daughter, sister, and best friends. Donate to my church and donate to missionary activities. Donate to charities aimed at alleviating poverty and hunger and improving public health within Canada, particularly those up north; an example would to be to try and fund, at least in part, the fixing of broken water treatment systems in a number of Indian reserves. Fund scientific and medical research. Invest (obviously) in various enterprises that caught my attention. One of my best friends would like to start his own gym one day, so I'd probably gift him part of the start up cost without asking for any share of the company. Buy a decent house, maybe something like 350k maximum. Stuff like that I suppose.

How rich are we talking about here? If we're talking somewhere along the level of Jeff Bezos, inter alia, the answer can be summed up in one word: YES.

  1. Seriously though, invest in a few good funds, one of which will be in Junior's name for him to use as soon as he's old enough.
  2. Donate to the Catholic Church. (Winks in Caritas Internationalis)
  3. Buy a few properties for me to rent out.
  4. Be a Patron of the Arts; contribute to high culture.
  5. Support my local community.
