I am not quite sure of China's claims of him smuggling ammunition but let's humor China for a second and think, what does this mean for relations between China and the U.S?
Let's look at this from a different perspective. An American citizen is now being held against his will in a foreign country. Think about it that way and it is just like, "Oh shit."
What do you think NationStates? Anything going to come from this?

The CCP trying to match Donny in the pettiness game.

Eh, this happens every so often. The usual saber rattling, a whole lot of nothing, and the situation being handled quietly in a way that lets both nations save face are all that will come of this, just like it has for the last couple decades or so.

Airsoft pellets are ammunition? Seems silly even for China.

Chances are nothing will come of this and it’ll end up like the Otto Warmbier thing, with the pilot just being held for years. Probably won’t end the same way, though. Not entirely confident that he’ll return safely.

Given Donny's reaction to Warmbier's death and Jamal Khashoggi's murder, it's certain he'll try to put on a buddy-buddy face with the Jynese.

Well could the USA use this as more reason to put on tariffs? Or even put a worldwide boycott on China if China does do something to that pilot?

In a word: No.
Granted, that won't stop those determined enough to do so, but this is a situation where neither side can really afford to piss the other off to the point of complete alienation and both sides know it. China owns the majority share of US debt, and business deals with US companies are a major part of China's economic strength. We pull our businesses out, their economy suffers, they decide our debt is due NOW, ours suffers, and neither side, as of yet, can really afford to play that game, especially since an economic collapse of either will mean the other loses, too, China because the US can no longer pay its debts or keep its companies afloat, the US because of our overreliance on cheap goods and labor from China.

Huh. But let's say it is released that the pilot is being, let's say, tortured? Then what do you think?

the Chinese aren't that stupid they wouldn't torture a foreign pilot over airsoft bb's most likely they'll have a show trial then return him in a prisoner swap with the US or just release him after talking to the WH and then barring him from ever returning to the country.

That's not how the US debt works, you know. China did not lend us money, they bought our treasury bonds. If they sell them, other countries and people will buy them, and they lose the interest they were earning on them.

I'd say we shouldn't debate hypotheticals. Torturing the Fedex pilot would be wrong and Fedex would immediately stop delivering in China. See how long they can deal with that.

I didn't know that, good to know. Thanks.
That is true and a fair point. So is China just going to release the pilot?
