Well seeing as doing something about the environment is not “mass societal upheaval” it really is.

You know that the protests are not even radical action?

They're much more radical than doing nothing or just talking online. Particularly when it's a global protest featuring millions of people in all sorts of countries, as this one is.

Buddy, oh buddy. It's not even a regularly done one (like the original idea said it would be), nor one that was even revived. It was only done ONCE (as far as I'm aware), and people forgot about it.

Oh yeah, and what about the people that have gone to them? They left their signs on the ground, thus, creating more pollution! Wasn't that the whole idea on not what to do?

The consequences of the creation of NSG have been disastrous for NS as a whole. NSG Delenda Est.
Apparently, the guy who coined the term "Drewpocalypse". No longer active on this account, has moved on to Foehn Paramilitary Regions.

Climate Change is likely to be a major factor in social collapse in a number of countries that will be affected the worst of it. Specifically those whose structures and institutions are already weak and burdened.

FFF is going on since a while and on 27th September there will be another global event day.

Mass upheaval is inevitable, and that's a good thing. If not for it, we'd still be living under the rule of warlords.

Every instance of upheaval gives humans a chance to create something better. The rule of warlords was replaced by the rule of kings, the rule of kings was replaced by republics, the republics of centuries ago in which most people were disenfranchised were replaced by republics with more universal suffrage.

We can see through the lens of history that it was incredibly ignorant for people in the Middle Ages to think the order of those days would last forever. Why should our society think differently? There are things that are today considered normal that our future descendants will look upon with the same disdain as we have for witch burning and slavery.

Climate change debates tend to get heated.

Anyway, I rented a car and drove to/from work since my bus was blocked by the protests to get me from work to home.

Meaningfully mitigating the damage of climate change (not stopping it, it's too late now, it's only a question of how bad it will get) is beyond the power of any individual. We can all do little things like consuming less meat and taking public transportation rather than driving, but the majority of carbon emissions come from big fossil fuel companies.

It's good that people use fewer plastic straws but the problem with focusing on that is that the people who make billions off environmental destruction want us to think it's all the fault of regular people.

But these kids are vocally saying "You're fucking up the world that we have to live in" and if that influences the people's votes in such a way as to elect candidates who will do something about the biggest polluters, that does make a difference.

I highly doubt the biggest polluters taking the kids seriously. Or even considering them at all. I also highly doubt this will change who people will vote for either. This is just kids skipping school

Check your calendar, because last time I checked it’s not 1840. The Prussian model of education is outdated and totally oblivious to the effects on society that a total focus on obedience and conformity causes. Conformity is honestly boring and leads to societal stagnation. Obedience is also only useful for working in factories and for the military, but beyond that stunts innovation and creativity. Automation is putting an end to unskilled, repetitive labor and most of the world’s militaries are progressing towards unmanned drones and vehicles as to not risk human life. Why live if you're not going to do anything but what society tells you? That's a life I would not wish upon anyone.

An Oligarchic state where the ultra-rich govern a nation of entrepreneurs and innovators. Just as corrupt, hedonistic and materialistic as you think, despite its progressive policies and emphasis on quality of life.

Obedience is an important thing to teach kids, and if I learned anything from serving, its that rebelliousness directly causes problems. The military is not planning on replacing soldiers anytime soon

I really, really doubt that the motivation of kids in "protests" is one bit different from when I went to school, and for the vast majority, I'm quite sure that motivation is to blatantly skip and get away with it; with a secondary goal of just-as-blatantly thumbing their noses at their immediate authority figures (such as assistant principals) and getting away with that, too.

The two or three who really believe in the cause and get the ball rolling are actually thought of as nutty zealots, but the rest of the student body will pretty much instantly jump on the coattails of anything that allows their true end. And yes, except for a few idiots, they will be smart enough to not tell outsiders that what they really want is to skip and stick it to the Man.

Once they realize that protesting does not really involve having fun instead, the zeal fades and school resumes. Setting this bit up as one-day events is a good way to cover that part up.

I support action against climate change. That being said though, the people at my job will be fucked if I call out, as we already have had six people call out for the last several days. If I call out, panera will be up a creak. I care about my co-workers and value hard work, so I'm still gonna be working friday. Also I gotta pay my bills

Judging by the medial attention FFF gets, I'd say, it's way too much, compared to, for instance, the demonstrations in Hongkong do ("In other news: Thousands of students in Hongkong are protesting against the influence of Mainland China and the civil rights they will lose. Now, the weather ..."). One could now argue, that the demonstrations in Hongkong are way less of a global thing than FFF, but the decline of civil rights and personal freedom is not exactly limited to one region, but just as global. The "priorities", for the lack of a better term, have been switching a lot, not only in media, but in many societies, in the last years/decades. I'm generally in support of societal upheaval, but there are different things to deal with before we combat Climate Change.
Don't get me wrong - Climate Change is a problem. But it it isn't our worst problem, or, at the very least, not our most urgent one. Should we, here in Germany, have our first Climate Change refugees arriving in trailers and with yellow license plates in 2100, as predicted, I won't be alive anymore, and should I have children, they will be fairly old by that date as well. But civil rights, freedom from surveillance, social security in a more and more automatized world - these are in danger now and in the near future, and the decline (up to non-existence) of all of these are something I'm going to be confronted with at a fairly young age (I'm in my mid-20s now).
So yes, I do support efforts for the global environment, but no, I got my issues with the movement in itself. The priorities have shifted in public debate in a certain way, though, and I think, that it's a perilous shift.
This being said ...

For this end individual and collective preparations and undertakings need to be done. First would be aimed at survival, individual preparation for heatwaves and related issues etc.

For the later that would be including public and national safety and emergency measures short term, and long term investitions into energy efficient technologies, thorium reactors and possible means of CO2 extraction from atmossphere and as well possibly geoengineering and last but not least spaceflight.

The whole focus on CO2 reduction alone is too late and will be too little. Whats necessary is CO2 sequestration and substraction perhaps.

Finally someone who argues in a rational and logical manner about this! Indeed, investing into technologies is the way to go.
Since Lillorainen's geography is currently being overhauled a 'tiny' bit, most information on it posted before December 12, 2018, is not entirely reliable anymore. Until there's a new, proper factfile, everything you might need to know can be found here. Thank you. #RetconOfDoom (Very late update, 2020/08/30 - it's still going on ...)

No but seriously, this is basically an unironic excuse to skip school. If we want to stop climate change, walking out of class won’t do much

Nah. We like not dying. Most of us are the ones who will be most affected. Some people may have gone to skip school. But they’re not a majority.

I'll let you in on a little secret: you know the mass revolutions and wars in Europe during the 18th and 19th centuries? They were caused by changes in climate which affected food supply, which resulted in mass civil unrest.
