It depends on context and their current opinion. And if they said it last week or several decades ago. They might stand by something they did when they're were young, but they're probably lying if they suddenly change their opinions right when it comes under scrutiny.

It depends, how bad was it? How long ago was it? Were they even a mature adult at the time? How have they changed since then? How are they apologizing?

We need to give people room to grow and change, but there should be some accountability if needed. And past actions and comments provide meaningful context on who they are.
