What I dismissed was letting a game end in a tie, and then claiming that that game counts towards a winning season.

It does. One point for a draw. Better than no points for a loss.

The Vietcong tactic of playing to "not lose" instead of "win" is how the USA was defeated in Vietnam.

Errgh, I have to say one of the most obnoxious things about sport threads, is the apparent inability for posters to see a thread about football (either girdion or soccer) and remeber that on an international forum the name football refers to at least two different games; for some reason this memory failure compells them to express thieir outrage that someone is talking about THE WRONG GAME!1!!1
How hard is it for people to recognise the context of the the thread and respond appropriately?
It's almost like sport is a type of entertainment and that maybe different people like different things but thats actually okay. Crazy I know.

Anyway, rant over. Favourite player: Maradona good, Pele better, George Best.

From the modern era, I have a soft spot for Nemanja Vidic. Great denfender and a good source of craic while you're watching the game.

What utter nonsense.

A tie indicates just that: the game was tied, neither team could best the other on the day. The point won by each team is not a consolation, for it (rather obviously) shows that drawing is better than losing. Moreover, a draw can most certainly count towards a win, for the winners are the ones with the most points at the end of the league. That one point can make or break a team's chance at the top spot, or save them from regulation.

Writing draws off as some example of patheticness is rather bizarre, and equating the Special Olympics with losing is rather pathetic.

In the long run, that's what happens in football (soccer) as well; only one team can win a league.

To be fair, in Knockout tournaments like the World cup, you'll go into extra time rather than just take a draw. The only thing is that the exta time is often very dull because all the players are tired and the tirder the teams are, the harder it is for them to score.

The way that games are decided doesn't really reflect on any aspect of maninlessness (although some posters seem to belive it does. Accepting a draw in football means that you lose all your wars?!! Not having a tie means that you have no long term vision!!) but probably the best way to play the particular sport.
I don't expect tennis games to be decided in the same way as I expect golf games to be decided. Who would watch tennis if it was based on having hit the ball the least number of times. Neither do I expect hockey games to be decided in the same way that rowing is. First across the pitch wouldn't be that exciting and I don't know how you would score a goal in a rowing boat.

Aye, I was just pointing out that playing on till someone wins isn't always inherently more exciting than drawing. Like I said horses to courses (although not like sport  ... :p ).

Nice. May whatever team you're rooting for win (Minnesota?) unless that can somehow hurt the Redskins. Good luck.

We don't even play them this year.

And ya, I'm vikings all the way, always have.

I meant for possible playoff positioning. And good about the Vikes, I like loyal fans. The loyal Detroit fans are my favorite. To go what they went though and to still show up at games, now those are REAL fans.

Representative soccer really is the lowest form of the sport. As great an event as the World Cup is, rep sides are always slapshod (even when laden with superstars) and are often more interested in not losing than in winning. Ironically, the Americans are telling us that a game that can tie is rubbish, yet when we have no ties in rep games, the soccer is much worse.
