Spanish Supreme Court upholds ban on Bull Torture

A historic ruling by the Spanish Supreme court has upheld a ban on a traditional way to celebrate the Toro de la Vega in which a bull is lanced to death by a spear-wielding crowd after having been chased to the banks of the River Duero. Its about time barbaric practices like this where outlawed. The is zero justification for it. Its nothing short of animal cruelty.

Bullfighting was also been outlawed in the province of Catalonia but the court overturned it. Hopefully this ruling leads to it being outlawed nationwide as the animal cruelty that it is.

Yep. It’s in how the bullfighter slowly pierces the bull with swords (although they look more like ornate shorts piers to me). If done properly, the bull survives, being slowly tortured until its paralyzed.

I had the privilege of seeing a rejoneo in Colombia. The skill of the picador as he controlled his horse with only his legs while holding and placing the pics -- a horse without a blindfold in a ring with a fighting bull is one skittish animal as you could imagine -- well what can anyone say. And the rejoneador placed his lance perfectly, resulting in an instant kill that brought me to my feet.

But hundreds of riders randomly stabbing at a bull with lances until it is brought to its knees? No thanks. A bad bullfight is a painful thing to witness.

I leave it to the Spanish, or the citizens of any other country, to decide whether or not the fiesta de toros is consistent with their modern sensibilities.

Stop me if you've heard this one before: it might have been in Pamplona that a foreign visitor was enjoying a meal in a local restaurant. He saw, and smelled, a succulent dish being brought to a fellow diner.

Bullfighting is an iconic cultural element, but it is quite barbaric. Surely it can be adapted in a way that doesn't involve stabbing an animal to death and maybe getting trampled?
